Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Patrick,

You must be going to the HPUX/Networking forum. I'm talking about the Networking forum at:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/FamilyHome/1,,268,00.html

Dan has already admitted that it runs slower for him too. When you click on it the header loads in the usual amount of time but then nothing happens for about 10 seconds then the rest of it appears. It's even slower when you submit a reply.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Ron,

Nope I am going to the Networking forum you are talking about.

What browser are you using? I use Opera 7 as my primary browser now (I got fed up with MS junk and Netscape) and it works great.

I just tried going there with MS IE and Netscape 7 and I now see what you mean. It is slow.

Give Opera a try and I think you'll be impressed with the speed.

There are other issues with Opera and the Forums though. But I can deal with those.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Patrick,

Using IE6SP1 on a Win2KSP3. It's a company PC so I really don't have the option to change browsers. Even if the problem is browser dependent it still needs to be fixed at HP's end and it shouldn't be too hard since they already have a bunch of forums working correctly (some of the time anyway).

This long delay in fixing simple problems does not impress me with HP's technical ability.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi All,

Wow, what a day...trust me, nothing would be finer than to have the recent performance issue resolved. We were humming along for quite awhile. The 404 and SSIs today were in part due to a networking problem, but there is definitely more work to do. Getting this fixed would certainly cut down on the reply notifications to this thread that fill my inbox. Of course, nothing compounds things better than a bout of the flu which I'm still battling.

Please know that I have been working with our support team to determine a fix. They have been working diligently to unmask the issue that has been plaguing us for the two hour window every morning. While they've ruled out a number of things, a clear reason has yet to surface. Jim, your idea of escalation is already in the works. Please accept my sincere apologies and try to remain calm as they sort things out.

Ron K., regarding the networking family load time, that should have already improved. I just tested it over a dial-up line at 29Kbps --the page loads were 6 seconds from click to full page. I went to the home page, clicked on the 'networking' family link and it appeared in less than 6 seconds. Same for the 2 sub-categories. Could it have something to do with your cached files? Try deleting anything forums. Also, regarding the XP category, I apologize that a response to your initial request wasn't immeidate, but your request was definitely under consideration. Having more than one request for a new category helps in knowing that the new discussion area will be succesfull. Your suggestion was the first received, but wasn't the last. The total requests made the decision easy and Roger happened to be the final. I do hope you find it possible to continue your outstanding contributions to the XP community.

Stephanie, your suggestion is a good one. I'll keep it logged.

John C., I tried fixing that thread...has to do with the URL pasted in. I couldn't find a way to keep it from blowing up the page. I removed the '=' sign from the end of the URL, which is usually the culprit. Sorry.

Finally, for all of you reporting the spam test messages -- thanks very much. I was able to get those removed due to your notices.

Take care,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi Dan:

The frequency of 404-errors on page refreshes or when I click a link to a thread (on the HP-UX familyhome pages) is about 30-40% this morning. I am posting this entry at 0754 EDT.

Regards!

Hi,

Not so much of a problem but a suggestion: How about showing the last few threads of the poster's question in addition to the reply view. - Half the time I can't remember what I started banging on about before I have to flip back a re-read!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hey Dan!

Just to go along with all the 404's and SSI's, now (1030 AM EDT) the slowdown has kicked in. It took 105 seconds just to open this thread.

I forgot to start my procura stats, so all I've got is one iteration:

Hope you're feeling better, Dan.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi All,

The 404s and SSIs were a result of a networking problem on HP's side. That was resolved this morning and the servers have been refreshed. As far as 404s and SSIs, things should be stable, and I haven't seen one yet. Let me know if you still encounter them (of course, 404s could be experienced for many reasons at either end of the pipe). Still trying to resolve the two hour performance issues.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Dan,

It's better but still not fixed. I took a different PC, erased all of its cookies and internet files and logged on to the forum. Then I went to my forum profile which is where I usually start from since the main page takes longer to load. I click on hp-ux and the page is there in less than 4 seconds. I return to the same page and click on networking and it takes 13 seconds. I get the same results if I start on the networking or hpux page and press refresh.

Note that my browser is set to get a new page each time and is not using a cached version which I suspect is why yours went so fast. If I set it to Never so that it uses the cached version then it is very fast to go from the profile page to the networking page but refresh still takes 11-13 seconds when the hpux only takes 3.
Since I am looking for new info a stale page is not much use.

These are the exact same times I get on my usual PC so it is not a cookie problem.

The good news is that the delay opening the individual questions has been fixed. I expect the remaining problem is in the creation of the two database query inserts where it says Top Users and Top Read Solutions. Probably forgot to index them or to cache the results so that they have to be created new each time.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Dan,

With all of the strange happenings on the forums over the last few days, we have ended up with a rather ugly thread. I was hoping that either you or one of the other fine HP people could take a few minutes and see about cleaning up the strangeness on this post for us:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x608319434a69d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

Latif and I both have had some problems putting replies on this one.

Thanks for your help!

PS. Hope you get over your bug soon, Dan. I know it isn???t any fun being sick ;-(

Thanks for the updates on the recent issues and their cause. It's nice to see that there are some issues that can be resolved on that network even if others can't ;-P~~

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - April 2003

Hi all,

over here in the *old* europe things may be a little slow (we call this "patiently" :-), but I've seen slower response in the past, and haven't got any 404's or SSI's for a long time (weeks, at least). And I am using lots of different browsers at the same time, without refreshing/clearing cookies nor caches, sending my laptop to hibernation with those browsers open, and am able to use them after waking the laptop!

Netscape7.02 & Beonex 0.8.1 & Phoenix 0.5, currently all three are open, in two of them I am logged with my european account, and in one with my american account - no problems.
And I do install and remove device drivers, applications and such every week - without reinstalling W2K (SP1), so I guess we can rule out the browsers as the main culprits...

Regards,
Wodisch (who's biggest problem is to deice which "hat" to use for which reply ;-)
