Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Things are pretty much working fine at my end just because of forum support from our experts. I have migrated two servers and solved some other problems with the help of forum. Its a great place to share ideas and great feeling for system administrator to increase their confident level by helping others in a correct manner.

Appreciated HP's forum member's help on time.

Thanks,
-Piyush.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Trying to use the search engine with forum category filter but not having much luck. How up to date is the search engine's index? I took a heading from page six of HP-UX and it couldn't find it. Tried it with text from the same post and no luck.

Also noticed that while the first page of the search engine offers the filter option the subsequent pages do not and default to "all forums."

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Hi All,

Thanks for the feedback and your questions. I'll do my best to provide enough info:

1. John P: At times, I have found posts are delayed a short time and eventually appear. When you run into a 404 error at what should be the "submit acknowledgement" page, the submission could still have gone through.

2. Ian: if you have a userid that begins with "BR" (European) you should login while pointing to the European database. If using a userid that begins with "CA", you should point to the Americas/Asia Pacific database. Discussion threads are the same for both. However, there have been reported cases of a "BR" user being dumped if trying to access a URL that was posted by a "CA" user. See Alexander Erme's post above.

3. Kelli: try accessing using the URL http://forums.itrc.hp.com. Also, clear your cache of any ITRC error pages. If you are using a proxy, this may be related.

4. Frank: thanks, I'll deliver that message to the developers to verify/fix if needed.

5. Procura: the only limitation I know of is the file size (1MB). I've asked about the file type and I'm awaiting a reply. I checked what you described and could not access either.

6. Alexander: Pain in the neck you are NOT! I'm not sure if this issue can be resolved -- but I have reported it. In future, if you are logged in using a "BR" userid, and come across a link, check the format. If the link begins with "http://us-", simply change "us" to "europe", as in "http://europe-".

7. Ceesian: see above, thanks.

8. Bill: I've removed the 1150 from links.

9. Ron: the search index is updated real-time. It is very up to date at the moment. However, the algorithms that are used to return results is complex, and I'm not sure about all the variables it takes into account when deciding what pages to return. For instance, it may return a thread where your keyword shows up a higher % of time, even though there are less occurrences of the keyword. Currently the page limit of results returned is 50. The filter you see, although it appears to work for forums, doesn't actually influence the results. I suggest bypassing it for now for forums, but using it for other areas of the ITRC. I've never noticed it not appearing on subsequent pages, but will report this, thanks.

10. Bill: the member's list is working now.

Thanks again for your feedback...hope this helps.

Regards,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Hello Dan,

for some days now I have the problem of timeouts and SSI errors when trying to see the members pages - especially "j" is very bad (could not see it for hours of trying):
/cm/MemberListContent/1,11917,LoggedIn!j!1,00.html
And I am as logged in as I could be - at least this reply is accepted from within the same Netscape-session...

"r" and "t" werde pretty slow, too, bad finally managed to be seen, but JRF's member-list is hiding from me :-(

...you won't get much of a statistic from me that way...

Wodisch

Hi Wodisch,

I'll get this reported and see if we can figure out what the issue is...thanks for the report.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Dan,

Just had a wierd problem. I was replying to the "What is this?" thread in the HP-UX > Security category. When I hit submit I got the following:

"Due to an unusually high volume of users, the ITRC is currently busy. Please try again later to access the ITRC.
To address this problem, HP plans to deploy additional replicated sites and perform hardware upgrades at existing sites, so all of our customers can be accommodated.
(Error 9901)"

Now I SINCERELY HOPE that the above statement about "...deploy[ing] additional replicated sites and perform[ing] hardware upgrades at existing sites..." is true. Any info. on that?

After getting the above page, I clicked on reload and got the "Thanks you for your first participation in the ITRC Forums." message. When I went back to the security page, my reply hadn't been posted.

I was able to click the BACK button on the browser to get back to my reply, and the text was still there (thank goodness). I clicked submit again and the reply got posted normally.

Strange behavior.......

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Hi Patrick,

I appreciate this information. The issue about receiving "first time user" message has been reported and the team is looking into it. Regarding the ITRC message about additional hardwared, etc., I need to find out more and get back to you.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Dan,

Not so much an issue as a question:

How does one determine which response got the rabbit?
I cannot tell - but I hear others speak as if they can. Am I missing something here or is it incumbent on the author to mention it in a post?

If there is currently no way than I believe having the response tagged would be of great benefit to all.

Thx - My 2 cents,
Jeff

To see which answer triggered the "magic rabbit", look at the points assigned to the answers. Any answer that is assigned 8, 9 or 10 points will cause the "magic rabbit" icon to appear.

The Search link is not working (Mar14 - 5Pm Europe time). It is not responding or comes up with a page not found error message.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Hi RajMan,

I'm wondering if it is server related -- I can get to the search engine fine. In fact, I was using it when you posted your message. Although you are likely logged into the Europe site, try this URL:

http://us-support2.external.hp.com/emse/bin/doc.pl/forward/screen=emseHome/sid=6287b7ff0b1b11eb8b?

Can you let me know the URL that does not work?

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Your work should be fixing "Reply" and "Post" for Opera and Mozilla on Win32 boxes :)

BTW I just tried the new beta search engine for HP-UX patches (http://support2.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/mainPage.do), which reponds rather strange on searches without results. I looked for "RRIP" for 800 (OS Dropdown box is a list of empty fields) and got

invalid field
view download list
The data specified is invalid.

patch-50014

This was in Opera-6.02 (1056), Mozilla-0.9.9 shows it correct, and also shows nicely that there are no patches available.
Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

Hi Procura,

I can appreciate your humor...I only wish I had a fix for Opera!

Thanks for info on the patch db, I'll pass it over to the team handling that area.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

I have an idea on what's causing the problems with the reply. I've noticed that it usually happens after lunch if I forget and leave the browser on the forum.

Going to make a mental note to check to that I shut down IE before lunch and see if that helps. Suspect there is some sort of idle timeout getting involved here.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Hi Ron,

Perhaps I should have mentioned it before...you will be logged off after a period of idle time. The time variable is never the same (its usually after about an hour, but I've had it occur after 20 minutes of idle time). If you try to reply while logged off, it will bounce you to the login page. The login page is an ITRC-wide service, and if that is being hit a lot, you may experience slow response or no response.

Thanks for the note Ron.....

Dan

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Quite often when I try to go to the "Storage" section my IE will hang up, and I have to manually kill it. It's fine for other section like "HP-UX", "Servers", "Workstations". Maybe is my browser thing ... i'm using IE5.0

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - March 2002

Dan

It does not bounce me anywhere. It just gives me a network or server error. I bet the bounce is broken since it has never asked me to logon. I don't normally logon anyway since it just reads my cookie.
