Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Hi Dan,
my issues are:

a) May owner of message meets Bunny without assign 8-10 pts? Sometimes, owner find solution by himself. New button [Solved] near [Submit points] can help.
b) May owner of post update it? I'm not english mother tongue and after send, sometimes, I see a grammar error. I'm irritated by theese mistakes.
c) I think Notify Me could work better; after system has sended a notify to user, should suspend sending (only for the current message) until user goes into it. This avoid a lot of notify e-mail for same message (this message it's a example).
d) Sumbitted points. There are some strange situation; sometimes no point assigned and sometime mush 10 pts assigned. It's very difficult to solve but my help with follows:
d1) When message has found rabbit, nobody can add post (since next day);
d2) Don't permit all 10 pts; owner have to assign based on answer;
d3) User has assinged points to less than 50% of his questions, cannot sumbit new message (exception if has less than 10 question sumbitted, to help new user)
e) New forum for congratulation; in VMS forum as soon we will have a new wizard.
f) Removal message: I received some removal e-mail: I understand only the first (double post) but I can understand the other. If I posted some wrong post I like known why, what, when so I can learn and I don't make error again. May e-mail contains the text of post removed?
g) Link to other forum. Sometimes, a message is to insert in two different forum; for example, when a user has a printer problem post in M$ forum and printer forum same message. May be very wonderful if a message can be visible by two different forums.

Dan, I thank you and HP for this forum.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Dan,

The monthly request list - please note the items corrected in the Sept 20 update have been m
oved to a separate section at the end of the list for now so that we can all appreciate the
efforts that you and the team put forth:

1) Recover the content lost during the 9/20/03 conversion/update - there are numerous threa
ds which suffered partial content loss, Merijn's statistics postings being a prime example.

2) Fix the occasional (but all too frequent) "unavailable" and "404" errors which can make
the forums unusable for hours at a time.

3) Pre-assign 0 points to all answers. This eliminates the whining about not assigning poi
nts and the obsessive pursuit of 100% point assignment ratios. Alternatively, eliminate the
tracking of points assignment ratios.

4) Create a new category under HP-UX for congratulations, humor and other miscellaneous off
-topic threads so that those who don't wish to view these items can bypass them.

5) Provide the ability for a user to customize the forum subjects they view by setting up t
heir own groupings (like: all of HP-UX, plus Servers (9000), plus Workstations (hp-ux based)
, plus all of Storage - well, you get the idea).

6) Show the poster's name in the reply window.

7) Limit the amount of space taken up by "masthead" stuff (headings, descriptions, rankings
, etc. at the top of the page) so we can actually see some questions. This is now worse tha
n ever - I have to page down just to see the first question.

8) Repeat the bread crumb navigation links at the bottom of the page so we don't have to pa
ge all the way up to the top of long threads. Also, add the same links to the notification
pages.

9) Could we possibly have a real, functional search engine? Please??

10) Could we have some sort of convergence between the US and European sites? They can't g
et to our URLs, we can't get to theirs, Merijn gets the wrong search engine - why do they ha
ve to be separate and different?

11) Other forms of URLs need to be recognized (https, ftp) as the http ones are.

12) Allow for formatted text that does not lose spaces, so script snippets can be understood.

The following are former issues, fixed in the last major update:

The slow submit issue that causes so many duplicate postings and duplicate replies seems to
have been completely eradicated, thanks!

The same is true for inablility to assign points issue, thanks!

And also for: (Borrowing from JRF: could you please *not* preload "databases" (just because it is the lexicographically first item). Instead, make the user choose the correct category.) Thanks!

Now, when a question is moved, the link points directly to the question, rather than just to the category, thanks!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Dan,
I think that is useful the possibility for owner of question to close the forum (clicking on new button close).
The question closed, can to be recognized by padlock icon (or other symbol).

This avoids to display, in the first positions, question very old or definitively solved. Also avoids answer to question obsolete.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Dan,

Twice this morning, and at least once daily since I first reported it in last month's thread (Oct 30, 2003 14:25:12 GMT) I've had to close down and restart my browser to clean up the "text instead of symbols" problem (is this what others mean by style sheet problems?). It now appears that there are no browsers that work correctly under HP-UX. This is extremely disappointing!

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Dan,

As long as I'm whining about Mozilla, I should probably also mention that responses don't get formatted like they do under IE. After a URL gets posted, the window gets stretched out and subsequent responses get turned into one long line. You have to scroll to the right to read the response.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Hi Rajeev
my profile is better then yours: I've assigned pts to 57 of 55 my questions.
I think this is because someone in HP forum has remove any messagge (I don't know what message neither why).
Have you receive any removal e-mail?

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Pete,
perhaps last your problem may be to video resolution; I've sended a post using IE with 1240x768 and post was formatted as long.
So, now I use only 800x600 resolution.

Obviuosly may be a different problem.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

As if on a schedule... I typed "ignite" into a search at 11:55am, no problem.
Typed "ignite" into the searchbox at 12:05pm, and get "No Results".

It's my only ongoing beef with this awesome website.

I'll get the "no results" on any search, until somewhere between 1pm and 3pm.
(The "return to functional" time does vary a bit, it seems.)
Not without 2 backups and an Ignite image!

Dan,

At work, we use Netscape products so when I click on the links it brings up Navigator which isn't working for the ITRC sight now. I need to copy the link and paste it into IE. This is irritating & a hassle.

Spike,

What version of Netscape are you using? I use 7.1 and have no problems whatsoever.
What are the chances...

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Spike/Joshua,

Not only what version of Netscape, but under what platform. I have no problems with Netscape 7.0 under Windoze, but Netscape 7.0 under HP-UX simply doesn't work.

How about those crazy time stamps?
What the heck does it mean with 24:xx:xx?
Surely that's not valid time?
Aren't there just 24 hours in your day?

For example... this reply!

Dan,

This is not really a Forum issue. I posted this to the "black and white" forum, one day ago, HP has not replied. Could you please check it out?

Unable to download new WJA (version 7.5).

Thanks.

Yet another edit request due to me being in a hurry or stupid.

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=246613

Please change the last sentence of the subject to: What PE_SIZE are you using for oracle oltp data?

Thanks. I want to attract people with the subject and I went stupid right before hitting submit.

Howdy.

CSS and a JavaScript errors using IE6 under XP.

They've come back again.

Also was very slow to get 'reply' form up.

Re: Please Report Forums Issues - November 2003!

Rumour has it that Opera have fixed the glitch preventing us from submitting posts. For all of us we now just have to wait for 7.30 to hit release (you just have to wait a tiny bit longer than I do)

You will notice that I got hold of a working version once I stopped attaching useless attachments.
