Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

Hi Everyone,

Please submit your highlights and successes you have had while using the ITRC Forums. Your feedback helps convey the positive influences the forums have had on your IT life. For example, have you:

1. Posted a question and received a key answer that solved your problem?
2. Have you viewed a message thread that had a solution to a problem you were trying to solve?
3. Found the Forums to be of particular help in sharing information, exchanging best practices, or saving you time?

I'd really like to hear from everyone -- your circumstances, the issues, the outcome, who was of help, time saved, etc.! If you have examples to share, please provide the URL of the thread if possible.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Best Regards,

A really cool thread -

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x0a49b82b2d63d71190080090279cd0f9,00.html

I think this thread is exemplary of the potential of the forums. Just have a look at all the dimensions to the problem that various forum-ites have noticed and are still pointing out.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

It???s been a pleasant surprise to be able to use an internet search engine like 'webcrawler' for the hp forum, especially when the ITRC search engine is not working. What surprises me is that the 'webcrawler' links still pull up when the ITRC search engine isn???t working.

Also, I've found subjects listed in the internet search engine 'webcrawler' that are not listed in the ITRC search engine. (* Which is peculiar. *) 'Webcrawler' not only has produced the subject matter but has also produced the links into the hp forum when the ITRC search engine has not.

Nice to have an alternative, (* even if peculiar. *)

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

Hi Michael,

Google is the one search engine that is allowed to index the forums. As you are likely aware, Google is excellent. It doesn't surprise me that it is an excellent tool for locating forums solutions, threads, info, etc. The ITRC search tool does quite well, but in times when it may be unavailable, Google is a great alternative.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

Working on a Saturday, trying make_tape_recovery for the first time, and hit an error. The error message reported that I was out of space in /var/tpm for a LIF file, which only needed 32 MB. I had 3 GB available.

Jump to itrc, search forums, find HP patch to apply for known problem.

Everything should be solved this quickly.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

yes Dan, I use Google which is a customised search from itrc forums only and honestly it is the way better than the search engine provided by the itrc forums :).

Nowadays for most of the common problems, I am able to dig out from the archives rather than asking the forums. Only specific problems are being posted and answered. The forums has a vast archive of problems and solutions and shows the maturity.

It will be better if all these are combined to form a FAQ, so that users can refer to that before posting.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

Hi Umapathy & Dan (of course!):

The concept and discussion of a FAQ has been raised before; in fact, in quit a bit of detail, during October 2001 in a discussion initiated by Wodisch:

Many thanks James. That was pretty early (before I joined the forums).
The discussions were around so many subjects and issues and is really helpful for a starter like me.

Don't hold your breath on this, but as of today, I suddenly automagiccally can assign points with Opera 7.11 (still have to submit twice though).

Let's see how long that lasts ...

Hey Dan,

just to let you know that Mozilla 1.2.1 on HP-UX 9000/800; en-US; rv:1.2.1)
works better than IE 6 on Windows2k!

Cool (suprised!?)!

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

The forums had the answer I needed....I had increased some kernel parms in response to running into nfile limit. While I was taking the downtime, I also increased nproc, among others. After rebooting, things were fine. Trying to restart measureware agents after making a change to the parm file failed. Worked with HP Support over a couple of days, and had to take yet another outage to change another kernel parm. This failed. Searched the forums, found a simple parm to add to the startup script...everythings works well. Wish I had started here first, rather than taking an extra downtime.

The forums are a terrific resource.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

Dan:

In my oppinion this is a GREAT tool. I have learned a lot just reading questions and answers and when man pages are not clear, I always look in the forum and almost 95% of the time I am able to find the answer. As a matter of fact, I started a job in this Co. 3 months ago and part of my negotiation was to have authorization to have the HP forums opened 100% of the time.

This is how confident I feel with the forum and how useful it is for me.

Keep up the good work and thank you to all the forum members for the help provided.

Regards,

DR

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

This probably doesn't count but....(feel free to zero point any post of mine here).

Every six months or so I lock up my console. I never remember how to reset it.

Finally had the bright idea to check itrc.

Its a winner.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - April 2003!

I don't know why I've never responded to one of these threads before but I can't tell you how many times I've told someone on my team "there's a copy of that" or "the answer to that is in the Forums".

Two best searches are ITRC Search http://us-support2.external.hp.com/emse/bin/doc.pl/forward/screen=emseHome? or Google ITRC Search http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=itrc

Cheers the ITRC Forums & all who participate.
