Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

Hi Everyone,

Please continue to submit your highlights and successes you have had while using the Forums. Your feedback helps convey the positive influences the forums have had on your IT life. For example, have you:

1. Posted a question and received a key answer that solved your problem?
2. Have you viewed a message thread that had a solution to a problem you were trying to solve?
3. Found the Forums to be of particular help in sharing information, exchanging best practices, or saving you time?

I'd really like to hear from everyone -- your circumstances, the issues, the outcome, who was of help, time saved, etc.! If you have examples to share, please provide the URL of the thread if possible.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Best Regards,

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

I use this forum virtually every day. Initially I posted a few questions and always got feedback now I rarely have to post a question as the answer is there already.
I've quoted A. Clays lifeboat script as a possible solution and using the caljd.sh he posted saved me all the scripting time. Also script posts from Bill Macnamara I've used and one particular post from Bill Hassel regarding memory windows helped me provide the SAP people with enough info to sort out a startup problem.
I've found advice posted by all royalty here helpful and recommend this to colleagues whether HP experienced or not who need information. This forum and site is my starting point for just about everything to do with HPUX and HP9000s.

Please keep it going, from one appreciative member.
I'll have a beer, thanks

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

I seldom post, becuase I can usually find an answer by searching previous posts. But I posted one last week http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xbe8d44f56197d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html
, and I not only got two anwsers to my question, but I got an even better solution from S.K. Chan. This is really a great resource!

Thanks for making it available.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

Got a database down call on vacation.

Brought it back up, figured out some cron jobs were probably not running leading to a full raw disk area.

Looked at the database(not oracle) owners mail and got this:
----- Forwarded message from root@hebron.juf.net -----

> From root@hebron.juf.net Fri Jun 13 11:03:00 CDT 2003
> Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 11:03:00 -0500 (CDT)
> From: root@hebron.juf.net
> Message-Id: <200306131603.h5DG30c06208@hebron.juf.net>

> Cron: Your job did not contain a valid audit ID.
> See your system administrator.

Cut and paste into the itrc search function:

Cron: Your job did not contain a valid audit ID.

Found a bunny.

Fixed my problem.

No call to the support center(HP saves money, me time).

Didn't even have to post a new thread(bummer, like handing out those rascally wabbits).

Just move along Steve.

Does making the Linux leader board qualify as a success?

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/FamilyHome/1,,118,00.html

Or does it make me a sadist?

If this post is not funny, please just delete it.

I thought it was funny, but I've been up working on a web site since 9 p.m. Central.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

Generally I just read a lot of already solved threads. It often happens that I get in a situation I remember reading about and even remember the solution (and else it's just a few mouseclicks away).

Most issues I posted myself get solved in a couple of days or just within hours after posting. These forums are of great value!
Contrary to popular belief, Unix is userfriendly. It just happens to be selective about who it makes friends with.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

Well what can i say, the forum folks helped me out yet again with quick replies.

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x5da744f56197d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

The responses gave me new options to try in the future if i get a system hang.

Allthough in this case i was lucky i was thorough and didnt have to do a restore.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

Dan,

I suggest the following link for a June success story:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xb9540ea029a2d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

This problem took three days to resolve. Chet told me through email that he is quite happy with his HP forum experience. This was Chet's first attempt at finding an online solution to a computer problem.

I replied that, while many other companies try the peer-to-peer support route, for accuracy and timeliness, they can't compare with HP forums.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - June 2003

Hello
1) Posted Q on Hard disk Replace which helped me to solve my problem.

One of my critical Disk was going bad. With in min, I recvd replies on how to go about fixing this. Best reply was from S.K.Chan.

I followed his step by step instructions, and everything went OK.

Here is the link
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x645f8b82cc91d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

2) If I have a problem, first think I do is to searc ITRC, which has a wealth of info.

3) ITRC is better than calling HP support, definetly a time-saver. Prefer ITRC than HP Support.

keep up the good work

I'm probably not supposed to say so, but Opera now is able to do everything! Have great expectations for the next release. Even points are accepted at first submission.
