Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your previous stories and great experiences with the ITRC Forums.

Please continue to submit your highlights and successes you have had while using the Forums. Your feedback helps convey the positive influences the forums have had on your IT life. For example, have you:

1. Posted a question and received a key answer that solved your problem?
2. Have you viewed a message thread that had a solution to a problem you were trying to solve?
3. Found the Forums to be of particular help in sharing information, exchanging best practices, or saving you time?

I'd really like to hear from everyone -- your circumstances, the issues, the outcome, who was of help, time saved, etc.! If you have examples to share, please provide the URL of the thread if possible.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Best Regards,

Had an Oracle DBA that could not get an export file to go over 2 GB. I had set all of the OS and filesystem parameters correctly, and was just scratching my head for more ideas, since I could create a 4 GB file by hand. While researching the issue, I saw a post that mentioned a cron limitation. The DBA had not mentioned cron, but was using it to run the export. When I applied the HP patch, problem solved.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Although I do not frequent the forums, I find them very useful to see how different people approach troubleshooting different situations.

I have little experience with HP products in general, but it is almost like sitting around a table listening to "shop talk". Some of it is bound to rub off on you, and it does. This even helps me at times to think outside the box on non-HP related issues.

Keep up the great work. Some of us "passive" readers enjoy the comments.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

A half hour before I was supposed to go home, I was asked to modify a script and add scp to it, so a file would be on a new system when it was supposed to be as part a nightly process.

The target server had just been Ignited and I knew I didn't have proper public keys generated.

Months ago, I got a doc from Chris Vail, cookbook on how to do that. Got the book right here at itrc. Of course the machine I stored the document on was down.

Went to itrc, got the doc, followed the instructions, tested the script and got on my bike headed for home only 10 minutes behind schedule.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Hi Dan,
I have been visiting the forum of'N'on for past 3 years and the journey has been amusing. Most of the times I get solutions to my problems just by a simple search in the forum. The amount of information in the site is enormous and invaluable. The efforts that HP has put-in are worth a salute.

Keep on foruming !!!

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Hi,

Had a simple but fix where the forums was an immense help.

One of my co-workers was complaining that her JetDirect printer would only print after she pressed the Go button, even though the printer received the data. (light blinking)
I told her it sounded like the printer an LJ 2100 was set to a manual print mode and that I would have to look up how to reset it. We have hundreds of various model printers in house, can never remember the exact working of each and this one has no LCD display.

Wouldn't you know it, we don't have the manual for that particular model.
A quick trip to the forums and viola' an answer (below) in seconds.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Dan,

I know it isn't my success, but I have to admit that this person sums up some of the messages I have been trying to deliver about the congrats threads as well as his own personal satisfaction with the forums in general. Please see the "May 14, 2003 13:56 PM GMT" entry on this thread: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x543963f96280d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html

This, in my opinion, is one of the bigger success stories in the last month not only for Jerome, but for the veterans of the forums as well.

Good work!

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

I don't ask many questions to the forum. I usually do a search first on the error I receive and so far I have not been disappointed. In every instance, except one very unusual circumstance, I have been able to search the Forums, extract the answer and resolve the issue in a matter of minutes.

To name a particular instance would be difficult, I refer to the Forum almost daily, but just the other day I was reading about a "disk failure" and of course the syslog entry reported the Hex address of the disk. I never knew what the entire hex address listed in ll /dev/dsk/ realy meant. A. Clay Stevenson replied with a great explanation.

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Seems this weekend on our trusted development system which we are currently rolling out to our development system something wild happened.

A bunch of passwords expired Sunday morning while the dba (who has root access as my backup) was migrating some oracle data.

root account was disabled Monday morning and of course the vultures needed a dozen changes to the cron schedule.

Went to the console, tried to log into the root account and got the password change dialog.

I typed in what I thought was the root password and it says ... sorry.

Which means, sorry you're out of luck.

Of course with a five digit point total, I know the next step is to boot the system into single user mode, which we did at lunch time.

Typed the passwd command, got prompted, same sas story.

Well now life sucks, 'casue I got a 1 hour window and its nearly half gone. So I decided to call support with a high priority call to fix this within my window.

HP's having network problems so they need some time to hunt the document.

Suddenly I realize that I should have checked ITRC.

Duh.

Found this thread.

http://search.hp.com/redirect.html?url=http%3A//forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x751fb941255cd71190080090279cd0f9,00.html&qt=null+%2Bpassword+%2Btrusted+%2Bsystem+%2Broot&hit=1

Right when I get started, support comes back on the phone telling me to do the same thing.

Thing is the dba says he DIDN'T change the root password. I figure it got changed while he was changing the other ones.

* shrugs.

itrc had the answer once again.

I don't think this post is worth any points, but people should know about it.

Steve

Re: Please Report Your Forums Successes - May 2003

Dan,

Here is a link to a thread that you are already aware of. In addition to you, Ken, Javier, and HP Chel contributed.

I think it is noteworthy as a success story because two issues were resolved: The original LJ software problem, and what to watch for when the author has two forum accts.
