Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hi Dan,

I'm not sure if this is a known forum issue or it's just me, but I'm not receiving e-mail notifications of replies to threads.

Thanks,
Greg

As promised my monthly complaint about the slowness on the Network forum and the lack of a forum for XP.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Dan: maybe you can comment on the status of two oft-heard complaints/comments:
1> Why does the text window on the reply screen have to be 28 characters wide? It is really hard to be sure a reply is coherent, let alone well-formatted, as it wraps commands and URLs into apparent oblivion. Can't this window be made 80 columns wide? 60? You'd even find me grateful (briefly) for 40 columns.
2> Text formattng tags that would allow slightly more sightly responses. I'm not sure I'd use them, but they have been asked for, over and over.

Thanks for all your work with the forums and the denizens that inhabit them...

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Greg, the notifications are working for myself. A couple of things: verify your email address in your profile is correct, be sure there is only one address (can only support one), and verify the messages you want to be notified on are at the bottom of your private forums profile page....go to "my profile" and click on "view or modify forums profile".

Ron, sorry about the networking category...nothing more to report. An XP category is something I will look more into, thanks.

Brian, the window size is simply what it went out as, and the tagging is obviously not supported now. We have both of these on the books for development. Hang in there until we get to them. Thanks for the reminders.

Thanks again,
Dan

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hi Dan,

since a abuse the notification-email state as a kind of bookmark (and hove about 200 of them marked) I can only second that: no notifcation eMails in a long time...

Ron: no timeouts/404/SSI errors so far for weeks (we have irresponsible politicians, a bad economy, but at least a good internet connection here in "old" germany)

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Dan,

Just look at the date from the authors post .The date shows ''July 05, 2001 08:01 AM GMT ''

When you do a reply it shows the correct date for the author.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

HTTP error 504
504 No response from server

Error connecting to 'forums.itrc.hp.com'.

Hi Dan,

Don't know what it is but I always have to Reload the page, cut and paste my reply and then press submit.

If I just press the reply button of a discussion, start typing and when I am finished press the submit button. I always get a "Server not Responding message". Is it me, or is it a kind of timeout the server has ??

When doing a "Back" --> "Reload" --> "Paste information" --> "Submit"
It does work.

David, are you using Opera 7? It's a known issue, being investigated. If it is, there is currently no know workaround.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Let me add my voice to the chorus on XP.

Those issues are being handled in the Windows 2000 forum. That's simply disingenous.

There have been slowness issues, and I've got a red hot connection here at work. I can't believe bandwidth is an issue with HP, so I'm thinking maybe the back end server needs to be clustered and have a little load balancing. Just an uninformed suggestion.

During the outage, I was wondering. If this server is a microsoft server, is it fully patched?

itrc provides me with entertainment, and I'd like to see it be reliable.

A big Thanks to Dan for helping me fix my stupid typing trick last month in the crack thread.

Yeah, my fingers were on crack 5.0a, that was the problem.

"since a abuse the notification-email state as a kind of bookmark "

It appears that the interface is syntactically munging up postings.

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

Hi,

It's me again.
The errors I receive using IE 5.0 (This is not where I chose for, it's at my work).
Still there is no workaround I asume ?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

David, the workaround is to find another job, where you are allowed to use workable software, but I guess that ain't no option for you :)

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

David, I notice that you report *5*04 errors, not the 'normal' *4*04 ones.

I am by no means a HTTP guy, but perhaps this difference is worth looking into.

It probably can not hurt to clear your IE cache ("Temporary Internet files"). There have been some recent situations where the wrong pages where 'stuck' in people's browsers (for example in mine). No, a Refresh/F5 does not fix these problems. (IIRC, I mentioned this in the January thread.)

Any HTTP types here who know the difference between 504 and 404?

Re: Please Submit Your ITRC Forums Issues for February 2003!

A couple of times over the last few days, I've tried to reply to a message, and have been told that I'm not registered at this site, and that if I'm a European user, I should use the Euro. site. Clicking on the site link in the message then takes me off to a reply box.

I've made no changes to my setup recently, and always access the forums from the same link in my IE favourites list. The response seems to be random - this time it let me reply immediately, despite the header bar on the page saying Americas / Asia Pacific.

Clocks are off again. For example I just read a 13:15 GMT article, but it was 12:54 GMT (or less).

Getting 404's trying to post some replies, and also extended page load times (30-60 seconds).

It's only this site affected of the ones I've been using.

Frank axed:
"Any HTTP types here who know the difference between 504 and 404?"

A 4xx indicates that the client did something wrong, e.g. asked for a non-existent file (404 Not Found). A 5xx error indicates the server did something wrong or failed to do something required, e.g. failed to respond to an HTTP request.
