Re: Primitive way of checking the system!!!
Online diagnostic tools, free at software.hp.com will also monitor and email. I include EMS in this bundle, which may not be strictly correct. It can be configured to monitor and communicate with system admins.
There is another script I posted called checkhardware.sh It scan shows the principle of scanning the syslog /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log for critical information that indicates faults like lbolt and sending out an email if anything is wrong.
I will make sure checkhardware.sh is at hpux.ws at http://www.hpux.ws/checkhardware.sh later todday.

Re: Primitive way of checking the system!!!
As for what to do if a system shuts down all of a sudden, the steps to take when it comes up are:
1. Check the file /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log to see if it gives any indication as to why the system crashed
2. check for a recent entry in /var/adm/crash or /var/tombstones. These are both probably best examined by HP rather than the sys. admin.
