Print spooler

The spooler on the HPUX server we are using keeps stopping without being instructed to do so.
I have checked syslog.log but there is nothing to suggest why this is happening.......

Does anybody have any ideas!???

Thanks

R.

Re: Print spooler

Hi Rakesh:

Check the /var/adm/lp/log file for any errors. Check the /var/spool/lp directory and check for lock files (SCHEDLOCK). Delete them if exists. Check the lp print queue status and delete if bigger jobs are waititng.

Re: Print spooler

Sounds strange. Did you spooler running without problem before, or only today? Check /var/adm/lp/log for any hints.

It is better for us to provide solution if you can give us more background info.

Re: Print spooler

Hi Rakesh,
This seems to be a PATCH issue.
Just check for the latest available patches for the lp print service and apply them.

Re: Print spooler

hi,

I came across a similar problem couple of years back and it ended up becoming a test bed for HP labs for sometime and a subsequent LP patch release to solve it ;-)

Check whether your LP related patches are uptodate. (the cumulative patches etc).
Post your swlist -l patch |grep -i lp
output and O/S version and somebody can verify it.

Do a simple test: shutdown spooler. clear up all pending requests in /var/spool/lp/request/printername (they are series of control and Datafiles corresponding to each request).
Start the spooler in verbose mode.
lpsched -v

Send test printouts and at the same time keep doing lpstat -t and monitor the /var/spool/lp/request/printername directory to see whether the requests are being cleared and their order is correct.

check the /var/adm/lp/log file for any lp related error messages.

You should get a fair idea of what/where the problem is by the above drill.
