Printer configuration on HP-UX 11

I have a few Dot matrix printers connected to print server emulators running and accepting requests from queues defined on my server.

They were used for printing character mode reports.

Now, I want to replace some of them with deskjets and laserjet printers, since my new application allows me to create/generate graphics and other types of reports that use colour.

Please advise on how to procede.

Last time i sent a pdf file for print on the printer using an lp -d command, i got lost of funny characters coming out!! (%PDF-1.1 1 0 obj << /Creator (developer 2000)....)

I guess i need to configure something on the server..

HELP please.

Re: Printer configuration on HP-UX 11

Hi

you can add a printer with jetadmin if the printer have a jetdirect card with an ip .

you can download the jetadmin from the hp site for free .

if the printer is connected to a nt spooler or a diff. o.s ( like sun ) you will need to define it as a remote printer .

about the funny characters , i think that it's the setup of the printer.

i have a printer define with jetadmin in my system and i can print pdf files to the printer .

again you can use vincenzo answer to add a printer but its depents to how the printer is connected to the server

if the printer have an ip adress define it with jetadmin , if not define it with sam

but check again the setup of the printer

Re: Printer configuration on HP-UX 11

hi,
vincenzo is right, we all add the printers in similar fashion.
sam-->printers and plotters-->LP spoolers-->printers and plotters-->Action-->Add local/remote/network printer/plotter-->Add parrel/serial printer-->RS 232 interface.
you need to furnish printer name, model(by pressing enter key you can select the model),class and priority(options). this will configure the printers. you can check the status using 'lpstat'.

Re: Printer configuration on HP-UX 11

Hi,

Like the others to add/configure a printer. I
think the best think to do is delete old
printers of your configuration and add new one.

For your funny printing, I think it's normal :
your printer can't understant what you say.
Printer can't understant PDF without a filter,
it's the same than printing a GIF or a PS (for
a non postscript printer).
If you can find your printers in HP JetAdmin's
models I think it's install good filters. If it
doesn't work use a filter like ghostscript for
postscript.

Hope it's help

Download Jetadmin from HP website. Before you install you must kill the following process hpnp. I had a very similar problem to yours.

Re: Printer configuration on HP-UX 11

Hi

Here U can configure this two ways.
1. Network Printer
2. Remote Printer

Network Printer:- Here U should assign an IP address to Printer and jetadmin S/W to be loaded. Jetadmin S/W is available in Application CDs.

Then Go To SAM-Printers and Plotters-lp spooler-printers and plotters-action-add printer-network printer.

Remote Printer:- Here U don't have to go behind Jetadmin S/W. Assign an IP address to Printer then SAM-Printers and plotters-LP Spooler-Printers and Plotters-action-Add printer-Add remote printer.

I hope this will help U.

Best Of luck

Re: Printer configuration on HP-UX 11

Well, there is a big problem with printing especially images to pcl printers. The language is key here....
HP-UX does not contain a ps2pcl translator. You can print plain text fine no matter how it's configured, but most UNIX applications (Netscape, adobe reader, etc...) only output postscript. For this, you either need a postscript printer, need to compile a translator, or such...

Not an easy task....ALT: get a single postscript printer for images....get linux's pcl translators and start converting and compiling, or get a box that can interpret like a linux box...
