Printer for HPUX 11 workstation

Printer for HPUX 11 workstation

Hi, I need to get an 11.11 box to see a printer. Do I just do lpadmin -d and add it to the host file, or is there more to it?

Thanks in advance, and I will assign points....

I'm not quite sure what you're asking.

Normally the easiest way to define a printer is to use SAM > Printers and Plotters > LP Spooler > Printers and Plotters > Actions > Add. At that point you have to determine whether the printer is local, remote or network attached. Local would be directly connected to the machine, remote would be directly connected to another machine and network would be a printer that contained a JetDirect card and had an IP address. In the case of a network printer, you would actually be better off to not use sam and use the hppi (HP Printer Install) utility, formerly known as JetAdmin. I'll dig up a URL for hppi.

Re: Printer for HPUX 11 workstation

To amplify Pete's response just a bit. HP-UX works best with HP LaserJet printers using the HP JetDirect LAN card. Since you talked about a network, I am assuming that this is a printer attached to the network. To add an HP JetDirect printer to HP-UX, you can use SAM and select "network" printers. This will start the hppi program which is part of your 11.11 installation. However, it is much simpler to use:

addqueue -h 12.34.56.78 -q myprnq -t off

No need to use hostnames -- IP addresses are usually preferred for printers.

Now if this is not an HP printer, or the printer is connected with a non-HP LAN card, you then add the printer using SAM as a "remote" printer. Note that remote printers are extremely limited and none of the typical -o options will work.
