printer goes "disabled" by itself.

printer goes "disabled" by itself.

On HP-UX 10.20, from time to time I get the printer "disabled". I simply type enable printer and everything goes back to normal.

Does anybody know why the spooler sets a printer to disabled state and how can this be avoided ?

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

There are a number of reasons that the printer can become disabled, covering the whole range from spooler to hardware issues, so it's not often easy to diagnose a cause.

You could set up a cron job to run at regular intervals (eg every 5 minutes)

which simply does

cd /usr/spool/lp/request
for printer in *
do
enable $printer
done

This will then attempt to enable every printer on the system.

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

The system sets it to disabled because it received a status back from the printer or jetdirect box saying the printer is offline or unavailable. The problem is not on HP-UX - its on the printer or jetdirect box. Check out the printer.

Hi

possibly a slow network

telnet into the printer and set
Idle Timeout :

Higher than now

Does it give a reaon for the disabled in lpstat.

Also try stopping the spooler .retsarting as lpsched -v and see if more info is logged in /var/adm/lp/log

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

Chris: thank-u but I prefer to find the problem.

Stefan: thank-u but there are not options on the printer server to play with.

Steve: thank-u. Network shouldn't be slow (100Mb). I telnet to the printer server but has no "Idle Timeout" setting to play with.

At this moment I set "lpsched -v" at /sbin/init.d/lp and I will wait untill it happens again, and see what /var/adm/lp/log has to say.

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

I am using a printer server from D-Link and printer is Epson C80. I configured the printer using sam as a remote printer (the remote host being the printer server itself) and not as a network printer thus not using hpnp.

I don't think there is much to do at the printer side.

This is what I get from telneting the printer:

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

Hi

I would say wait for the input from lpsched -v and we will see

Also

Lexmark has a jetdirect like software called markvision which can be downloaded from the net
and should service the card in your device.

May be worth looking at to give you a tighter control over the printer since it is free.

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

Hi

D-Link 10 BaseT Pocket Print Server with a Single RJ-45 Port
The D-Link DP-101P+ is a "Pocket Size" Ethernet Print Server with a Centronics port (Parallel Printer connection) and a single RJ-45 (Ethernet) port. The DP-101P+ provides a solution for sharing a single printer among several users in a local network. Its IEEE 802.3 Ethernet port and IEEE 1284 parallel interface allows it to connect most Parallel printers directly to an Ethernet based LAN. The DP-101P+ provides all Ethernet network users the necessary advanced features, wide protocol support, and ease of use to fit well into networks ranging from small home networks to the enterprise level networks.

The DP-101P+ comes complete with easy to use software to install to most PC or Mac networks. Protocol support for TCP/IP, NetBEUI, and AppleTalk are all provided to ensure seamless connection to all of Windows Operating Systems, Mac OS, Unix, Novell and other major networking Operating Systems.

The DP-101P+ has a built in Web based management feature that allows users to easily configure and manage multiple print queues through TCP/IP. Additionally, the DP-101P+'s integrated support for Telnet provides an alternative method to configure the unit.

Does the Web Based feature give you more

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

I just checked.

On the web server it shows and lets configure exactly the same as the telnet server.

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

I have seen problems with laser printers which go into Powersaving mode causing the print scheduler to disable them. Try checking this?

Re: printer goes "disabled" by itself.

In /etc/lp/interface/ you will have a script. At the bottom of the script is the command to disable the printer. Here you can insert a partial script to warn you via email when the printer has been disabled. This way you can get near-real time input and a common place to produce a status.

the subnet mask is wrong

please change; correct value is: 255.255.255.0
