Printer port 39 or 515 ?

Hi all,
I have a doubt. Is the port 39 for printer?
In /etc/services for printer it is given as 515 as printer saying remote printer spooling.

I want to know , if we comment out
#printer stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/rlpdaemon
from /etc/inetd.conf file. Will the port 515 gets blocked or port 39?

If both gets blocked then how can I block 515 port only

Regards

Re: Printer port 39 or 515 ?

Different printers and print services use different ports. I think HP printers like 9100, some Konica's like 10000.

My print spooler(easyspooler) uses 515 and/or 1515.

What you do to inetd.conf will merely stop the daemon you are commenting out. It will not block the ports like a firewall or changing the /etc/service reservation would do.

HI,
I doubt 39...
515 is fot remote printing and jetdirect uses 9100

Re: Printer port 39 or 515 ?

Hi Irfan,

Although port 39/udp is labeled "rlp" it's not remote line printing - it stands for resource location protocol.
Port 515/tcp is remote print spooling & the HP print spooler know as JetDirect does indeed use 9100/tcp.

HTH,
Jeff
