Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

When I try to install from CD, it freezes as soon as it tries to boot:

Boot
: disk(##/#/##/####;0)/stand/vmunix
### + ### + ### start 0x####

So, I've been trying to run the install from Ignite on a C200 workstation. I've installed the May 1999 Core OS into a depot, and installed the March 2004 patches with:

# make_depots -r B.11.00 -s /tempdir/QPK1100.11.00.depot
# make_config -r B.11.00

Everything seems to install fine. It installs 642 filesets for the Core OS, and then 570 filesets for the Patches. It successfully updated the firmware to 5.0. It had an "error" on a VXFS-ADV-KRN fileset since a prerequisite was not installed.

When it reboots, it panics as if the ccio driver is not installed. (It also had a similar panic w/o the QPK bundle.)

I installed 11.0 on my C200, and added in all the drivers. I then stuck that hard drive in the C3000 and tried to boot. No luck. Probably hardware path problems.

As far as possible defective memory, I've removed/moved the modules, and I basically get the exact same error. I normally have 256m in the primary slot, and 128m in the secondary for a total of 384m.

Questions:

How can I install 11.0 from Ignite on my C200 to my C3000?

Is the hanging when booting from the CD-ROM likely a CD-ROM drive problem? I also tried a few other drives, and had the same problem with the CS jumper, and with the Master jumper set.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

I would try doing a make tape recovery on a working system and recovering it to the broken system. Make_tape recoveries can be a nice tool to rebuild a system. You may have some hardware issues at hand and this would help confirm this.

Also, make sure to try a different set of CD in case you have damaged CD.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

do perhaps consider a newer Core OS CD.

I might after trying a newer Core OS cd, swcopy and all, try a cold install followed by application migration.

If a cold install fails you may have a hardware issue that needs to be dealt with. Probably not memory though.

Do you have ball the SCSI terminators installed ?.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

I don't have another Core OS CD handy, and this is my only C3000.

The C3000 uses two internal SCA disks, so termination isn't an issue.

I was using Ignite 3.5.xx. I'm trying again with 5.3.35. I'll definitely let you know if it works.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

Actually, I was wrong about the termination. There are supposed to be terminators on the external connectors, but they're lost. I do have a LVD terminated cable on the external connector, but nothing on the narrow connector. It would seem odd that it could install the entire OS, and then have a termination problem when booting though.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

Hi again.

I didn't remember if I tested installing from CD after I got the latest firmware. It still locks up.

Boot

7573604 + 532480 + 524928 start 0x1d54e8

I tried Ignite-UX 5.3, and had different results:

Boot
: disk(10/0/15/1.6.0.0.0.0.0;0)/stand/vmunix

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

I've found info about a GSP (Guardian Service Processor) Console. Is that an extra I/O card in servers? It sounds useful, but I don't think I have one.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

I installed the Core OS, QPK1100, and HWE1100 on my C200, and tried to put that disk in the C3000. There is most likely a hardware path problem.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

All of my hardware is fine, and I was able to install the OS. :-)

I had to create an Ignite/HP-UX install on my C200 and include depots for the March 2004 Quality Packs and Hardware Enablement Patches. Then, I was able to install, and boot the system.

I'm still refining the procedure to create the Ignite CD. Right now, I need to change some paths in the *_cfg files in order to have it find all of the files during the install without requiring me to run swinstall from the command prompt.

I'll probably end up using a Golden Image so I can run the install quickest.

Re: Problem installing 11.0 on C3000 w/ Ignite-UX

I figured out how to create the CD-ROM with a CoreOS depot instead of a Golden Image. It also uses CDFS instead of HFS. The procedure is at: http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=140855.
