Re: Problem RAC Installation

Can you give more info about the environment?
What is the OS version?
Serviceguard version(if installed)?
How many nodes?

>>/dev/vgrac/rocr_2 is inaccessible
Is this logical volume is accessible? Permissions are ok?

Re: Problem RAC Installation

os is hp-ux 11.23.

Serviceguard is not installed.

there are 2 nodes

logical volume are accessible from both nodes.

permissions are 640. in fact we have tried with 777. but once we run script root.sh the permissions of ocr devices changes to 600.

Re: Problem RAC Installation

Hi again,
If you don't have serviceguard (SGeRAC) installed how can you use SLVM? Is this a supported configuration?

Re: Problem RAC Installation

Thanks for the information. We do not have Service guard & ASM with us. Is it possible to install RAC without the above given softwares. is there any other way to make slvm.If yes then can you provide us the document which explains how it can be done.
Again thanks for all the help. The information is helping us a lot because we are doing the rac installation for the 1st time.

Re: Problem RAC Installation

If you are not using Serviceguard then probably the answers you seek are not to be found in this forum. Certainly it is possible to install Oracle RAC without Serviceguard but to do so you need to refer to Oracle documentation and ask questions to Oracle directly.
Most documents you will be pointed to here depend on Serviceguard to supply the underlying shared storage for data. If Serviceguard is not doing this via SLVM or CVM/CFS, then you need to do it another way as documented by Oracle in their manuals that discuss RAC installation.

Re: Problem RAC Installation

forgive my ignorance , this is our first time with oracle rac, is serviceguard or asm a must to install rac? is installation of rac is possible without both ?

thanks.

Re: Problem RAC Installation

You can install Oracle RAC without Serviceguard. There must be physical shared storage. The physical shared storage must be managed by a volume manager that understands shared storage and can present that shared storage up to the application layer without corrupting data.

Your option for a standalone RAC installation without Serviceguard is ASM over raw disks, however ASM does not support multipathing(I think this is true, I am not an Oracle expert) so if you use ASM over raw disk, you must use a product or operating system that provides the multipathing itself. Or run without it and risk losing access to the device if a path fails. This is really a question for Oracle experts, not a Serviceguard forum though.

Re: Problem RAC Installation

ok thanks

here comes the dumb question:

can we make shareable storage via hpux command set , we are using 11.23.if yes please give pointer towards procedure

we do not want to use serviceguard and as we understand asm would be available/applicable only after oracle 10g is installed, so the question is how to make disk shareable. do we have to install oracle 10g before we install oracle rac?

asm is not a standalone product.

thanks.
