Problem with comunication with drive LTO GEN 2

Hi, I have library with 6 drives. Library is connected over SAN to 3 servers. With one drive o have problem to comunication with servers. On each server I controled the device: ioscan -nfC tape /all devices are correctly installed/. If there is a problem with device, I use:
1. ioscan -nfC tape /i saw the HW address of device/
1. rmsf -H HW_Address
2. reboot the server /it is not neccesary, but sure is sure/
3. ioscan -nfC tape
4. insf -e -H HW_Address
5. ioscan -nfC tape /the device is there, and the device file is in /dev/rmt directory/

But the tape drive doesnt work, from each server. The tape drive is good, because when I change the drive slot in library, the tape drive work correctly. The drive position is good in library, because other tape drive work correctly there.
On next day /morning/the drive in new library driver slot /in which yesterday worked correctly/, dont work, why I dont know. I sow syslog.log, but there is nothing :(. When I would write data to medium or format medium it write Write Error I/O, and in syslog are errors. The errors i attache to message.
Can you help me, i check the SAN, Fibrechenel, library but every think worked good. During night, must something do, but what i dont know.
Please help me, thanks

Re: Problem with comunication with drive LTO GEN 2

excuse my asking but is this drive working for some of the servers and not working for some other servers

-or-

one drive is not working for all servers

if you are getting write errors from this drive on all of the servers attached to it, there might be something wrong with manetic tape head and drive may need hardware service. Good alignment in the library or being able to accept tape cartridges in and out, means the robotic tape exchanger arm is working fine but it does not guarantee that the drive is functional as a writable device.

Re: Problem with comunication with drive LTO GEN 2

Hi Peter ,

Check the follwings :

1. # ioscan -fnC tape

( Does it shows ok , i.e CLAIMED.

2. note down the device no.
# mt -f /dev/rmt/51m status

Do you get the status like that:

# mt -f /dev/rmt/49m status
Drive: IBM ULT3580-TD1
Format:
Status: [0]
File: 0
Block: 0
-----------

If yes that mean its ok from unix point of view & its communicating . And seems need to check up the drive with h/w vendor , seems h/w problem.

Hope this will help ,
Cheers ,

Raj.

Re: Problem with comunication with drive LTO GEN 2

Hi Mel,

the drive dont work on all servers, but the servers see the tape drive, when i use ioscan -nfC tape. When I use stm, to see the status, serial etc. on drive, it work correctly.

Hi Rej,
the drive is see in ioscan -nfC tape. status of mt -f /dev/2mn command is:
Drive: HP Ultrium 2-SCSI
Format:
Status: [0]
File: 0
Block: 0

I think the drive is good, can the DP 5.5 have error, when in format the mediam told Write Error I/O [5]

Thanks
