Problem with Hostname

Can I have a hostname longer than 8 Characters?
I have a HP-UX 11i Openview server. My companies standard is to have a Hostname of 8 Characters.

Yes and no, but in reality don't make your hostname longer than 8, it's not worth the headaches and gotcha's. The 8 does not include your domain name.

Re: Problem with Hostname

No the hostname is as follows rdginfamon02 and this naming convention is what we use on all of our servers. It seems this the only server so far thats had a problem our Solaris servers are fine with it.

Re: Problem with Hostname

If this is something that a Package (Oracle, Openview, etc) requires to see and resolve, can you use an alias for the Host in /etc/hosts?

I know some packages do insist on the hostname being set, but some can get away with an alias.

Re: Problem with Hostname

If your companies stand is to have host names that are 8 characters, then why is that servers hostname 12 characters (rdginfamon02)??

What I mean by gotcha's and headaches, is that some software will only recognize the first eight characters (crappy programming in my book).

What kind of issues have you encountered on HPux with 11i?

Have a look at this thread, particularly Bill Hassel's response:
