Problem with windows share mounted through cifsmount

Hi All!

I'm having a problem with a windows share mounted with cifsmount: when i try to read from it, all goes well; when i write to it (with a cp command) the copy fails with a message about a connection timeout.

I tried to increase every timeout i found in /etc/opt/cifsclient/cifsclient.cfg, but so far i had no success.

The share is actually a floppy, may this be a problem? When i try using a hard disk everything works just fine.

May an upgrade to cifsclient help (i used what was available on the machine, not the latest depot available).

Bye,
Alberto

1) A CIFS upgrade is almost never a bad idea. They fix a lot of problems in the more refined later releases.

2) If it works okay for a disk and not for a floppy, that is significant. How much data can you put on the floppy anyway? Is the write tab set properly on the diskette?

Re: Problem with windows share mounted through cifsmount

The file i tried to transfer was about 49 Kb.
The write stopped ad 32 Kb exactly (32768 bytes).

Hi Alberto,

I've certainly not seen anyone share a PC floppy out before ;) Have you tried to map the floppy from another PC and then retry the copy - to see how this behaves?

regards,

Darren.

Re: Problem with windows share mounted through cifsmount

Yes, i tried that.

The reason i'm sharing a floppy is that the various machines we use (and i do not mean computers here, but simply hardware used in our production plant) are interfaced with computers that run different (and often ad-hoc-written) software.

The only way to share data is via comma-separated text files. Given the fact that we do not have a lan at the plant, the only transfer medium available is a floppy disk.

With the old K260 (and serial connections to the terminals) we used the file transfer features provided by Reflection 2, but now that's not a feasible solution anymore (we are porting our oracle 7 applications to oracle 9 and we will be using them via a web browser).

By calling unix commands from within PL/SQL i can mount any windows share, hence automating the transfer (the user does not have to write filenames, dirnames, etc.) and do the whole thing from any pc available (we will have a lan at the plant - at that moment the floppies will be replaced by directories)... A little unusual, perhaps, but it works well enough for us. Ok, no, for now it only half-works :-
I hope the situation is clearer now.

Anyway, first thing tomorrow i'll get the latest cifsclient and install it (i didn't before because it requires a reboot...)

Bye,
Alberto

Re: Problem with windows share mounted through cifsmount

Hi all.

I don't want to be overly optimistic, but it seems the cifsclient upgrade worked and now the transfers, even to the floppy, are ok.

Thank you all for your time.

Bye (Ciao)
