for the /etc/passwd file using the following command
#chacl 'username.group=6' /etc/passwd
but the next day it was showing 444 ie read only .what is the reason for that?
Please give the solution so that i can make that file rw to a particular user

Only on HFS, or on file systemns on JFS 3.3, and even then with restrictions.

have checked the time-stamp of the permissions
change (ls -lc /etc/passwd)? If it is "during"
boot phase, I guess it could be the "swagent"
which is sometimes taking a rather long time
startup, due to such checks.

You may "correct" it by modifying the perms
inf the "IPD", ie. below "/var/adm/products/"
This is NOT supported! be careful!
