Problems with fbackup/frecover

Hi All

I am having a problem trying to restore some data saved onto a brand new DDS tape via fbackup.

The command used was:

frecover -f /dev/rmt/c0t3d0BESTb -xv -i /home/sysoprkf

This job was created within SAM. when i try to restore the objects back onto the system i get the following errors.

frecover(2105): did not find expected file marker
frecover(5409): unable to read volume header
frecover(5418): not an fbackup volume; unable to read volume header
frecover(2105): did not find expected file marker
frecover(5412): Do you wish to try to salvage this volume? (^[yY]/^[nN])

Re: Problems with fbackup/frecover

Sounds like a bad tape or the the fbackup did not work properly. What happens if you dd if=/dev/rmt/c0t3d0BESTb??

Re: Problems with fbackup/frecover

Hi,

This looks like bad tape, before confirm this.
we need to check with tape drive

dd if=/dev/rmt/c0t3d0BESTb of=/dev/null bs=1 count=1

if this gives any Error: then drive itself is bad. otherwise we can doubt on tape.

Re: Problems with fbackup/frecover

My experience has been the following:

1) Bad tape drive.
2) Bad tape drive makes tape bad.
3) Tape goes bad.
4) cron job doing an fbackup requests a new tape and doesn't get it, because it didn't write to the console.
