Problems with Gnome Authentication

I'm kind new to the HP-UX world, but soon as I saw that HP launched a gnome version to HP-UX, I was tempted to try. Ok then I download all the depot files (librarys and core files for Gnome, and even for the new Netscape). I installed using the swinstall and everything was looking fine, until I changed the /etc/rc.config.d/desktop file to use the new Gnome instead of the old CDE. I stoped the cd via /sbin/init.d/dtlogin.rc stop and started the gnome via /sbin/init.d/gdm.rc start, the login screens appear with the face of the gnome, buuuuuuuuuuut, when I tryed to logon using my personal account or even using the root login I received the same message, Authentication Failed. Well, this is the short history of the problem that is happening. Until now I have looked for information here in ITRC, on the web via google, in the page of the Ximian and didn't found any clue about what is going on. I check the file permissions, the GDM is using the user gdm (maybe one problem should be that I created this account manually, cause it isn't created by the installation), so I checked to be sure that all files related in /opt/gnome and /var/opt/gnome was owned by the user gdm and group gdm. Other thing that I tryed out, to check the /etc/pam.conf and the /etc/pam.d/gdm files to see if there is any reference to the authentication problem, but I don't have any clue of how this files works. So, here I am, asking for help.

Ohh, one last thing, via the gdmconfig running under the CDE, I had enabled the log in syslog, but the only strange thing that I saw in syslog was this lines above:

Couldn't set acct. mgmt for root
gdm_slave_wait_for_login: end verify for ''
gdm_slave_wait_for_login: No login/Bad login
gdm_slave_wait_for_login: In loop

It seens to me that the GDM isn't getting the login name.

Anyone had a clue about it? Thanks in advance..

Re: Problems with Gnome Authentication

Hi Fabio,

I'm not familiar w/Gnome on HP, but it appears to me to be one of 2 scenarios

1) Your system was using some sort of "extra" auth (SSH, PAM, etc.) before you installed Gnome & Gnome needs to be made aware of it.

2) Gnome came "out of the box" with a setting to use such & your HP system is not set to use it - in this case it needs to be turned off in a Gnome config file.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Rgds,
Jeff

Re: Problems with Gnome Authentication

If your system is in trusted mode it doesn't work you must come back to normal with the command /usr/lbin/tsconvert -r

Can't believe....

Bull's eye Rouchon, my problem is that I was running HP-UX in the Trusted mode...

Thank you very much, now Gnome is running smooth here.. :)
