Problems with login after updating to HPUX11

Hey colleques,

i have updated a C3600 workstation from HPUX 10.20 to HPUX11.11 . No there??s the problem that the HOME-Variable is not set at the login.

Only when root logs in the Variable is set correct. When other users log in (NIS) the Variable is empty.

Any solutions?

HOME is set by login, based on the user's home directory in the passwd file.

Since NIS users are not getting this set correctly, I suspect a problem with the NIS passwd map.

Try doing

ypcat -k passwd.byname

and verify that you are seeing the correct entries for your NIS users.

Check your nsswitch.conf file as well. It should read

passwd: file nis

May consider PHCO_27374 patch.

Check the global and local passwd files. Those will have the $HOME directory entry for all users. If you are using NFS automount HOME directories with NIS, check if those daemons are running and it's working properly. Check the /etc/auto_master file and it's configurations. Also, check and see if it's only happening on NIS users?

The best option from moving to 10.20 to 11.X was a cold install.

Another reason why cold install is better.

The home directory is supposed to be in the /etc/passwd file.

I'd run a consistency check /etc/passwd
pwck

Fix problems with the users involved.

You should not have to explicitly set $HOME in /etc/profile
