Procedures to remove secondary swap

In a pinch, I had to add secondary swap to my 11.0 server. I want to remove the secondary swap and I read where you delete the appropiate swap entry from /etc/fstab then reboot the server. Is this correct? If so, will the space allocated to that secondary swap be freed-up automatically?

Re: Procedures to remove secondary swap

Hi,

Yes. But that will free up the logical volume only from being used as swap volume.
If you want to use that space, you will have to remove that logical volume using 'lvremove' to back fill the space in the volume group or create a filesystem on it using 'newfs' and use it.

Re: Procedures to remove secondary swap

Assuming it was device swap and not file system swap, that should be all there is to it.

Re: Procedures to remove secondary swap

Not so much freed as simply not used. If this was device swap the actual space is left unchanged but is now free for any other use. If this was filesystem swap, you can remove the swap file/directory as it is not longer being used.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Procedures to remove secondary swap

Hi,

Yes that is correct. Here is a link to another thread if you require more details(A quick search brings up plenty of matches). After the reboot you should be able to use the old swap space as normal diskspace without any problems.

Re: Procedures to remove secondary swap

I find it is best to use SAM to remove swap, and yes a reboot is required.
