Pros and cons between hp ux 11.23 and Redhat 3, update 6.

Friends,

Need help.
I have been asked to send the pros and cons of selecting a high intensity oracle 10G database on a RedHat 3 update 6 (3 node RAC using 3 DL580's 8GB Ram/4 CPUS) and HP UX 11.23 (2 node MC service Guard ,RX4640 4 CPUs/32G ram)

Can you put your opinion, pros and cons to one another OS's ?

Hi,

I do not have much to say about the hardware comparision. But, as far as OS goes, You are comparing OS's with dissimilar features though the underlying structure is UNIX.

There are many factors that needs to be compared, few to surmise..

1) Cost

As far as the cost of purchasing only OS is concerned, I think Red hat Linux should be a cheaper option. Except this other points I believe Red hat has no match with HPUX. It can lead in almost all the feature you compare it against.

2) Stability

I would simply add a pointer to HPUX regarding this, because HPUX has withstood the test of time. It is very stable not only in OS perspective ,also as far as H/W it sits on ,is concerned.

3) Support

Though the support extended by Red Hat user community on the net is extensive, I still add a pointer to HPUX,because U have innumerable options as far as support goes. You have free ITRC for instance. You have different support level provided by HP depending on the SLA you strike with the HP for the purchase of H/W and OS. Why this is very important...., if you face any issues with O/S or H/W with the assumption that ur app is critical and the issue was not fixed from the net, you are at the mercy of user community in case of Red Hat, whereas with HP you have a dedicated professional help available from the experts itself.

May be I would have missed some points, I think SEP and others could be more helpful with there experience in Linux administration. I only hope I haven't been more partial to HPUX.

Suggestion: By posting this thread in HPUX section, you would have got a pro-hpux pointers. I suggest posting another one in the LINUX section of this forum. You might get pointers related to pro-linux. Later you can compare the pointers from the experts from these 2 threads.

Let your effort be such, the very words to define it, by a layman - would sound like a "POETRY" ;)

Silver, Linux is a desktp platform and not advisable to run business critical database like Oracle 10g. HP UX 11.23 (2 node MC service Guard ,RX4640 4 CPUs/32G ram) is a good option. Oracle usually goes with HP-UX.

shivkumar, linux a desktop OS hey. tell that to google or any of the other users of the linux machines listed in the top500 supercomputer list.

my take on this; when looking at the OS alone, i'll pick linux any time any day. hpux has one great advantage, and that is the integration with the hardware (even sun/solaris lags behind here).

another thing you'll have to keep in mind is the pricing. oracle rac is not the cheapest thing on the planet, and even though linux is cheap, the oracle rac license might make it more expensive solution then 2 hpux servers in cluster.

scaling is easier with rac, run out of juice and you just add an extra server to the mix. run out of juice on the hpux box and get ready to replace it with a bigger machine.

complexity, rac is complex, but unless you also are the dba it is not really your concern. oracle with a cluster is simple, everybody knows it too.
