Putting NIC into promiscuous mode

Hi,
I am trying to run tcpdump on my network card (token ring) and get the following error:
tcpdump: recv_ack: promisc_phys: Device busy

Is it possible to put the card in promiscuous mode and if so what's the procedure ?

here's an ioscan
ioscan output
lan 1 8/20/5/1 token1 CLAIMED INTERFACE EISA card MDG0002
/dev/diag/lan1 /dev/lan1
Thanks

Re: Putting NIC into promiscuous mode

You don't mention what version of HP-UX you are running or what type of system and patch level of the card driver. This is obviously an EISA Token Ring card.

The message states that the DLPI call to set Promiscuous-Physical was made. However, the call failed with device busy. So, you don't need to do anything special. tcpdump is trying to set promiscous.

I've seen problems if there are a lot of lan interfaces and issues with ppa versus nmid. I would suggest making sure you have the latest archive of tcpdump.
