pvcreate run very slow!

The rp5470 box with a DS2405 storage system!
I use "ioscan -funCdisk" command and run fine, I can get 8 disks' info correctly (claimed)! Then I run "pvcreate -f /dev/dsk/c4t0d0" and got no response now! I view the EMS message from /var/mail/root , and find that the is some error messages:
>------------ Event Monitoring Service Event Notification ------------<

Notification Time: Wed Apr 21 21:33:24 2004

l3000 sent Event Monitor notification information:

/storage/events/disks/default/0_10_0_0.8.0.255.0.4.0
is >= 3.
Its current value is CRITICAL(5).

Event data from monitor:

Event Time..........: Wed Apr 21 21:33:24 2004

Summary:
Disk at hardware path 0/10/0/0.8.0.255.0.4.0 : I/O request failed.

Description of Error:

The hardware responded to the initial query, but then it stopped
responding to more requests by the driver. The I/O request was not
completed.

Probable Cause / Recommended Action:

The bus device reset may have occurred or the device has failed. The bus
device reset could have occurred because the power was cycled or that the
device is a part of an enclosure and a device in that enclosure was pulled
out or put in, or that the interface card had a problem and it reset the
bus. If these errors continue, there may be a problem with the device or
the card.

Re: pvcreate run very slow!

If attached to a disk array with no lun0 assigned to the fiber card the disk array shows up as a disk.

Its not, you can't pvcreate a disk array and you get EMS messages.

Solutions:
1) Ignore it, its an EMS bug.
2) Have the disk/san admin assign some disk to lun0 on any fiber card connected to the array.
3) disconnect the fiber card if its just sitting idle

What you choose is based on your situation. I do 2 when I can sometimes have to do 1.

Re: pvcreate run very slow!

But sometimes I can do pvcreate! For example:
# pvcreate -f /dev/rdsk/c4t1d0
After a very long time (about 10 minutes) I got the message:
Physical volume "/dev/rdsk/c4t1d0" has been successfully created.

Something strange...

Re: pvcreate run very slow!

Things I would do:

- Check the hardware. Make sure the SCSI controllers on the DS2405 are OK
- Check you cables. Makes sure they are all seated well and that there are no bent pins in the connectors.
- Check termination. You should probably have a terminator somewhere on the DS2405.
- Make sure all the disks are seated well on the DS2405
- Make sure you are using the appropriate type of SCSI Card for the DS2405.

If all of that checks out -- call HP support.

Re: pvcreate run very slow!

Looks like some problem in the card...
I had faced the problem once ..but that time ... I had to replace the card ...anyway...
How many controllers are there in the system.. ?
If there is another controller ... you can identify which controller is giving the issue...

What happens when u issue "ioscan -fnC disk" how much it takes to give the output ...
Please check the syslog at the same time whether any errors are reported....
