PVG-strict/Distributed plus RAID5
Hello, while having serious (I/O) performance problems, please help me to improve the performance by recommend me some changes to setup of LVM or disks.
Current situation:
two VA7410 plus extensions: VA01 and VA02. Each VA has 24 disks (36 Gb). VA01 is exact mirror of VA02. Both VA's have Autoraid on (=RAID5). Eight LUNs of each 32 Gb have been created. Each LUN with even number uses all "even" disks (12, RG 1). Each LUN with odd number uses all "odd" disks (12, RG 2).
Each Logical Volume has the Allocation Policy: PVG-strict/Distributed.
Question 1. When using PVG-strict instead of PVG-strict/Distributed, will the performance increase?
Question 2. Will performance increase when using two LUNs of each 128 Gb instead of eight LUNs of each 32 Gb?
Thanks for your help! Ric Siebel

Re: PVG-strict/Distributed plus RAID5
I do not think either setup will help performance.
This would appear to be a database server or something that is i/o intensive.
For data, index and dynamic logs involving oltp databases should be raid 1.
Raid 5 is a bad idea for write intensive environments because every write has to happen in between 3 and 9 places depending on what parity you have set.
