pvmove question

I have a logical volume that resides on two EMC hypervolumes. This 20gig partition is only 1% utilized, so I want to reduce the size to only one of the EMC hypervolumes. Can I use pvmove to move the data from one physical volume to the other physical volume while people are utilizing the lvol? I am hoping to have this transparent to the enduser

Re: pvmove question

Hi:

Yes, you can use 'pvmove' while the physical volume is in use. 'pvmove' operates analogously to mirroring in that a physical extent (at a time) is locked and moved (or replicated, in the case of mirroring). There may be some performance degradation during the process. Do *not* interrupt 'pvmove'.

Re: pvmove question

I have found that pvmove takes a *LONG* time copying when compared to making and breaking a mirror. I only use pvmove for small amounts of data (< 1GB). However, if you don't have the extra disk to mirror, you are stuck with pvmove.
