[Q] failed to create bootable tape

I am using hpux 10.20 on HP b2600 model.

It is used for interfacing CMM, so it is unable to upgrade HPUX OS verion. (10.20 -> 11i)

As a End-user's calling, I tried to backup of OS/application totally.

IBM DDS2 tape device was used to backup device and new dds2 tape media was inserted.

make_tape_recover, make_recovery, two commands was used and seperately ..

make_tape_recovery -a /dev/rmt/0mn -A -v

make_recovery -A -Cv -d /dev/rmt/0mn

I typed that commands and could see a " successfull" message.

mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn rew

mt -t /dev/rmt/0mn fsf 1

tar tvf /dev/rmt/0mn

It is able to see the contents of tapes that I used to fully backup.

#/opt/ignite/bin/copy_boot_tape -u /dev/rmt/0mn -b -d /tmp

#lifls -l /tmp/bootimage

the results is ...

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Hi,

What version of Ignite are you using?

Some versions of Ignite have serious problems and don't boot at all (B.5.2.x, B.5.1.x, and B.5.0.x). Check http://www.docs.hp.com/en/IUX/ and upgrade to the latest version.

Enjoy :-)

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Hi,

And did you used make_recovery or make_tape_recovery? make_recovery and hpux 10.20 are oldies...

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Hallo Tony,
I did all the things on my 10.20 system you did. I was able to boot on a test machine with the copied boot tape, but my tape is a dds3 tape not a dds2 tape.

What is your ignite version on your 10.20 box? Mine is Ignite-UX-10-20 A.3.7.95, that the latetst release for 10.20 from HP.

Unrecoverable data error.
ENTRY_INIT 5 encountered an error while transferring data to/from the target controller or device
WRN. C7F0. EXT IO. other IPL fault. Error loading IPL from non-primary boot device.
Are you able to boot from an alternate bootpath?
Otherwise you may contact HP about yor problem

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Tony;
check your ignite version;
#baan01:/#swlist|egrep -i ignite
B5725AA C.6.0.109 HP-UX Installation Utilities (Ignite-UX)
Ignite-UX-11-11 C.6.0.109 HP-UX Installation Utilities for Installing 11.11 Systems

and go for link as Pedro's reference...
it is very easy to install new version of
ignite

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Thx, all replyers..

I have a question about updating IgniteUX.

I contact HP website for downloading IgniteUX recently version.

But, there are Some version for HPUX 11i not 10.20.

Is it possible to use IgniteUX for 11i on 10.20 ?

May this cause any problem or trouble (including critical situation) ?

If it is possible, I can't update IgniteUX for 11i.

And that case, plz, let me know where can i download IgniteUX for HPUX 10.20.

Thx, all ..

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Hi
HP-UX 10.20 support is discontinued and all Ignite-UX releases past 5.4 no longer support 10.20 clients.

The new version Ignite-UX 6.1.44 does not support 10.20 clients it supports only 11&11i boxes.

Try these links, u may get the 10.2 versions

Re: [Q] failed to create bootable tape

Lim,

I had the same exact error message as you had. I was trying to load not only from a make_tape_recovery, but also from a firmware to tape. I can access and restore tapes once in the OS, but at the boot level I had no success.

Did you ever get this figured out? If you did, what did you do?

thx
