I'm configuring a new rx6600 as an Oracle DB server with 16 internal drives using the P400 HP Smart Array RAID controller. My first thought is to create two RAID sets: use the first 2 drives and mirror them with RAID1 and use this for /vg00. Then I'd configure the other 14 drives into a big RAID5 with a couple of spares and put everything else on that.
However, since I'm going through the same RAID controller would it actually be better to just build one big RAID5 using all 16 disks and put everything, including /vg00 on that?
Any input would be appreciated.
Mark

Solution
hi Mark!
This would have been my preferences:
1. Define RAID1 using sufficient disks that would cater for the OS and the area where i would be installing the Oracle software.
2. use the rest for defining my ASM area that would be used for my Oracle Database.
As you must already know ASM is just like raid 10 in effect -- done at the extent level of database segments instead of some
os stripe size.
This is the most simple and clean setup i can think of.
Beware however about performance - with one RAID controller... You only can compare you previous system performance and what you are looking forward to.
If you need any further assistance, please do let us know.
Good luck!
kind regards

Re: RAID1 for OS, RAID5 for the rest? Or, RAID5 for all?
Hi
Actually the thing is that, it is recommended to install OS in RAID 1.
Compare to RAID 1, 5 RAID 0 is more faster.
For other application installations you can use RAID 5.
But if you want faster speed for bettr performance, better use RAID10
