Re: fbackup issue

Hi guys,

When trying to run an fbackup I get the following error:

# fbackup -v -f /dev/rmt/1m -i /home
fbackup(1004): session begins on Tue Mar 28 11:59:18 2006
fbackup(3205): WARNING: unable to read a volume header
fbackup(3024): writing volume 1 to the output file /dev/rmt/1m
fbackup(3125): write error on an FSM in the ANSII label
fbackup(3025): write error at the beginning of the volume
fbackup(3316): enter '^[yY]' when volume 1 is ready on /dev/rmt/1m,
or '^[nN]' to discontinue:

Have initialised the tape also, but this has not had any positive effect.
Please can someone tell me why it aint working?

Cheers

Habib

Re: Re: fbackup issue

Shalom Habib,

Try a different tape.

Tapes come in contact with magnetic forces and the tape drive guides and can simply wear out. Its also possible that the tape was badly manufactured.

ioscan -fnC tape

Make sure the tape drive is claimed.

Re: Re: fbackup issue

Hi Habib,

Pls check if the device file used in the command(/dev/rmt/1m ) is correct and ensure the tape drive is CLAIMED in #ioscan output with above device name..

Else u can create a device file using the following procedure.

Example: The DLT8500C file can be created so that both formats are available:

#mksf -v -d tape2 -I 1 -D /dev -a -b D8MM_8500C /dev/rmt/DLT8500C
#mksf -v -d tape2 -I 1 -D /dev -a -b D8MM_8500C -n

Best Regards,

Re: Re: fbackup issue

Hi guys,

Thanks for your quick responses.
It seems that the issue was with the tape itself.
Have changed the tape and the back-up has run fine now.

Thanks for your prompt responses.

Salam and Peace
