Re : How to change max pv per pe

Hi Guys,
Can anyone advice how can I change the max_pv per pe. Attach is the message when I try to create a vg of 100GB. Please advice??

# vgcreate /dev/vg26 /dev/dsk/c18t2d0
Increased the number of physical extents per physical volume to 51199.
vgcreate: Volume group "/dev/vg26" could not be created:
VGRA for the disk is too big for the specified parameters. Increase the
extent size or decrease max_PVs/max_LVs and try again.

# vgcreate /dev/vg27 /dev/dsk/c18t2d1
Increased the number of physical extents per physical volume to 51199.

Re: Re : How to change max pv per pe

You need to either decrease the maximum PVs or LVs or you need to increase the pe size. All of these can be specified in the vgcreate command: -l for max_lv, -p for max_pv, or -s for pe_size.

Re: Re : How to change max pv per pe

Hi Vincent:

The geometry of the LVM structures is fixed during 'vgcreate' and must fit into one physical disk extent. The 'max_pe' and 'pe_size' have the largest influence on the overall LVMRA (LVM Reserved Area)size. I suggest that you increase the 'pe_size' at least.

There is a table in the LVM chapter of the Software Recovery handbook which offers some suggested sizing combinations:

Re: Re : How to change max pv per pe

Back up the data.

Rebuild the vg from scratch.

try the -p

parameter in vgcreate

If you limit the number of physical volumes in the VG the amount of PE's available is spread over a smaller number of disks.

Be careful. Under this scenario, the one I use if you need to add a disk beyond you have to rebuild the VG.

Re: Re : How to change max pv per pe

The short answer to all the previous posts is that you can't change that parameter after the VG's been created. You have to:

1. backup your data
2. Remove the vg
3. Recreate the vg
4. restore your data

If you have the foresight, you can increase that parameter via the -e switch. Setting it to the max of 65535 should allow you to add a disk of any size to the vg regardless of the sizes of the disks on which it was originally created.

To date, I've yet to have had that level of foresight...

Hi Vincent,

Your options are limited. You either have to follow what you see above to have a supported vg or call your HP support Rep. (if you have support) and ask for an unsupported tool called vgmodify.

NOTE - vgmodify as far as I know is unsupported.

good luck,
peyman;

P.S. attached is the manpage for vgmodify (hpus 11.11 only)
