Re-installing HPUX 9.05

I have an HPUX 9.05 system that I need to re-install. I have two options available to me.

First, I could re-install from the 9.05 CD and install all of the patches. However, I need help to identify all of the patches needed. I should have all of the patches backed up on tape, but would need a list of patches to make sure I had them all. Does anyone have a list of the patches and their dependencies? If this list could be produced from another HPUX 9.05 system, what are the commands?

Second, I have another system that has a very simular setup. I could replicate the system drive and change all of the relavent config files. Does anyone have a list of all the places I need to change the hostname and IP address?

I have a backup of the old system that I could use to look at config files, but it was not working well enough to just restore that drive.

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

My first HP-9000 box ran HP-UX 9.x

No LVM.

I don't even remember if it had SD/UX yet.

Bad news here:
http://www1.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/search.do?BC=patch.breadcrumb.main|&pageContextName=hpux:::

The earliest OS you can search for patches is the 10.00 release.

So your source for patches is going to have to be physical media. You might be able to get HP to look in some internal database for you.

I actually have media lying around but in the past HP has expressed clearly they'd rather I not ship or share the media.

If 9.05 has SD/UX the command set is the standard swlist swinstall swremove.

If not, this post is quite useless.

You aren't going to find any patches for 9.05 on the HP web site.

What kind of system is this?

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

Well, I would suggest you walk through the install screen on 9.05. If I recall its fairly straight forward.

DO NOT DO A MINIMAL INSTALL as the resulting OS will be functional even if you plan to patch it.

As far as the patch list, I would use your "similar" machine to get a patch list.

As I'm sure you're aware, 9.05 is way out of support so if these Apps are critical, you may want to consider upgrading the OS and/or the hardware.

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

Hi Guys,

We know that HP-UX is ancient and no longer supported. Unfortunately, we cannot upgrade. Our compilation environment must match our NAVY tactical target environment exactly.

Is there a command in HP-UX similar to "sys-unconfig" in Solaris that allows you to reconfigure the network parameters?

If not, if we clone the hard-drive from another system, what files would we need to change to ensure that the hostname/IP address gets changed in all of the necessary files?

Thanks,

Brian Whyte

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

bryan,
the sys-unconfig equivalent is:

set_parms initial

it is a walk-through, so no options are necessary.

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

Suggestion:

If the NAVY is still using HP-UX 9.05 then they probably have a really expensive(don't cringe taxpayers), support agreement with HP. Since you support the Navy, it might be possible to use the same support arrangement to get patches and guidance.

If your customer relies on you for advice, they need to plan an upgrade. This is an armred service branch, responsible for national security. Their systems should also be secure, up to date and supported. If they move their environment to a supported 11/11i environment support costs will drop significantly.

Good Luck,

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

Thanks for your suggestion.

Upgrade would be imminent if the EOL on the system was not so close.

Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

Well, there is one thing to note: leading up to Y2K, HP offered the upgrade to 10.20 free - along with a very valuable Software Transition Kit - because 9.x was not compliant. So, it shouldn't take much arm twisting to get it, if the above suggestion can't be followed (going to 11i).
Who can belive the Navy is using something so outdated? I realize it is a good operating system and I too am against upgrade for the sake of upgrade. I still use 10.20 to run several million dollars worth of equipment - because it works! However 9.x is not even Y2K compliant! Does the Navy not care what century in which it launches a missile? Re: Re-installing HPUX 9.05

You guys are making suggestions about an issue that you have a very narrow understanding of. This is a forum to discuss HP-UX, not politics. While I appreciate your suggestions, your comments are beginning to offend me as a professional. In the future, please do not be so naive in your thinking. Nothing you have suggested is new to me or the Navy. There are several caveats that you are missing and I am not at liberty to share.

Thanks to all of you who posted comments relating directly to our questions.
