Re-installing K580

Hi,

I have a K580 server running HP-UX 10.20 & Oracle 805 but want to load HP-UX 11 and Oracle 8i/9i. This will be a clean install! Would I require to install any hardware;firmware patches before doing the clean install?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Re-installing K580

Don't bother with HP-UX 11 it will be made redundant in a year or so. The latest version is 11i and you can run this as either 32 bit or 64 Bit (Assuming you get the relevent Oracle versions as well). Make sure you also have the latest March 2003 patch bundle. You should'nt need any additional hardware but post up how much memory you have and the number of processors for confirmation/recommendations. There were some problems with some EISA cards under 11i but I think that this only applied to the D class machines.

Firmware should be updated by an HP engineer unless you really really really know what you are doing.

Re: Re-installing K580

Just flicking through my 11i upgrade course notes (worth attending at HP if you can) memory requirements are minimum 128Mb and disk requirements 4Gb in root volume group (Although I would go for at least 8Gb personally). The notes also state that firmware updates are a requirement for A L and N class but K class is not listed as needing updates. It is of course still worth getting done anyway though.

Hello,

Oracle 9i will need more memory.

Re: Re-installing K580

Firmware is a must to review.
I agree with Nick start with 11i, dont bother with 11, it will be redudant next year anyway. One of the things I think is very important is the sizing of your internal disks. Make sure you are cautious with the sizing of filesystems if you have small disks and only loaded the additonal software you really need.

Re: Re-installing K580

Hi

You will be fine with the processors but if you can up that memory I would be inclined to do so (and would have even under 10.20). Second user memory for K classes is getting cheaper all the time.

To give you an idea we run a 120 user 120Gb Informix database under 10.20 and we have 3Gb of RAM with 2Gb of that normally in use.

Saves a lot of swapspace use.

Re: Re-installing K580

Also be sure to check the Installation information over at the Oracle OTN site. This will have what patches, kernel parameters, and system requirements are necessary to run each version.

Re: Re-installing K580

Hi there.
Before you go for the new install, be sure, that you have exports of your databases.
You may be forced to install the new Oracle version, because 8.0.5 is not certified for 11i
afaik. If you go that way, you can create an empty database and import your stuff to it.
