rebuild tape device link in HP-UX 9
We have an old HP-UX 9.05 system, which has /dev/rmt/0 linked to a disk. We want to rebuild the link so it points to the tape drive. What should we do? Thank you very much in advance.

Re: rebuild tape device link in HP-UX 9
some time ago, but ...
first look, if a/the tape device is found:
ioscan -n
cd /dev/rmt
- look for the new tape devices (compare with ioscan-output):
ls -l
- remove the wrong links
- create new links
- don't forget, that you have rewinding and non-rewinding devices.

Re: rebuild tape device link in HP-UX 9
I think that if you just remove the existing device file /dev/rmt/0m with "rmsf" or however you do that on 9.05; and then ioscan -f, insf -e, he will just automatically rebuild you a new device file.

Re: rebuild tape device link in HP-UX 9
This is what it should look like ...
in /dev:
dr-xr-xr-x 2 bin bin 1024 Feb 24 1995 rmt
in rmt:
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x201306 Nov 17 1994 0m
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x201307 Nov 17 1994 0mn
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x20130e Nov 17 1994 3hc
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x20130f Nov 17 1994 3hcn
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x201306 Nov 17 1994 3m
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x201307 Nov 17 1994 3mn
Good luck

Re: rebuild tape device link in HP-UX 9
Im looking for the Interface/Device Drivers and can only find in /etc/master:
scsitape stape 1 1FB -1 121
s2tape s2tape 1 FB -1 54
I know that these will cause sctl c700 to be in the kernel:
* Driver name
*
dskless lan01
scsi sctl
scsitape sctl s2tape
s2tape sctl scsitape
scsifloppy sctl
I dont remember if you create the sf with insf or mknod sorry, but I would connect the tape, reboot so HPUX detects the new tape drive and associate it with a device driver and try to use insf. Unfortunately I have no more HPUX 9 mans nor boxes...
Good luck

Re: rebuild tape device link in HP-UX 9
crw-rw-rw- 1 bin bin 121 0x201306 Nov 17 1994 0m
2.0.1 is the scsi interface
.3 is the target scsi.
I wonder if you shoulnd use mkdev...
I remember now you will have to do a man of config because I remembered using config -a that creates a shell script mkdev (or alike... I gettting old...)
you use mknod for non HP device
to list major/minor you type lsdev...
Thats all
