Recommended maximum logical volume size

Hi all,

I want to know what is the reccomended maximum logical volume size in an HPUX 11.11 box. I know I can create lvols up to 2Tb, but I want to know if there is any kind of problems by using a lvol of 1 or 2 tb of size. Is there a document with these recomendations ??

Re: Recommended maximum logical volume size

Hi,

It really does not effect anything and if your requirements are for such a big file system than you can create it without problems. But some other things to be noticed while creating the file system should be that you divide your I/O across as many physical disks as possible.

It all depends on how you use it. Most important is the underlying disk architecture.

If you have lots of physical disks arranged into a massive LUN, then you may have I/O issues with writes if the underling disk is RAID 5 and you want to set up a database server.

The correct answer to your query is, What are you using it for?

Re: Recommended maximum logical volume size

Hi,
It all depends on your setup and requirements. Some of things that i can check out is:

1. How frequently this LV is going to be accessed.
2. How many SCSI Controllers are in picture while you access this LV.
3. How many disks are being used and what Disk controllers they belong to.
4. Are the disk distributed on controllers and whether i achieve performance.
5. WHat redundenacy i am getting.
6. Failure recovery
7. Backup

That's all i can recollect.

Hope that helps.

Re: Recommended maximum logical volume size

Hi R.O.

Logical volume size, specified in megabytes is a decimal value in the range 1 to 16777216 (the implementation limit). It is rounded up to the nearest multiple of the logical extent size, equivalent to the physical extent size defined for the volume group by the vgcreate command . The default is described above.

If you're going to large, you want to make sure you've got hardware mirroring as well.

You don't want to get into a situation where you have to reload 2 TBs of data. That would take a LOOOONGGG time.
