Recreating DDS device files

We've inherited some L2000 servers from another division and there were no device files for DDS in /dev/rmt. I used insf to recreate and now I'm able to use the tape drive. Once I reboot, the device files are gone and have to be recreated. What am I missing.

Re: Recreating DDS device files

Device files should not dissapear by themselves. Please check for any script deleting them ;o)

Re: Recreating DDS device files

insf -e should install the device file and reboot should not delete it at all. Check in rc.log if scripts deletes the device file!

| | The steps for adding a tape drive to the system are: ^|
| | |
| | 1. Make sure the necessary device drivers are configured into |
| | the kernel. (When the OK button is pressed, SAM |
| | automatically makes this test and, if necessary, will guide |
| | you through the building of a new kernel.) |
| | 2. Shut the system down and turn off the power. |
| | 3. Choose the interface card to which the new tape drive will be |
| | connected. |
| | 4. Choose a bus address for the new tape drive that does not |
| | match the bus address of any other device connected to the |
| | chosen interface card. |
| | 5. Connect the new tape drive to the chosen interface card. |
| | 6. Turn the new tape drive on. |
| | 7. Turn the system on.

Re: Recreating DDS device files

There nothing in rc.log that indicates they are being deleted. Here's something stranger. I did a ll on /dev/rmt and I see the 12 or so device files, (0m,0mb,etc). I go into SAM to make sure the driver stape is in 'IN' status as suggested earlier and it is. I get out of SAM and do another ll and they are now gone.

Re: Recreating DDS device files

Hi,
Is the tape driver in the kernel ? Device files should not disapper when rebooting, instead they are created automatic at reboot.

Mark

Couple of options

1.check samlog

2.Recreate the files then chmod then to 000, go back into sam and do exactly the same and see if sam throws up errors.

3. Check patch levels

Re: Recreating DDS device files

The stape driver is in the kernal. I added the devices back, did a chmod 000, got in and back out of SAM, devices are gone.

Re: Recreating DDS device files

I think Paula pointed to right direction: patches. From the description I guess that SAM deletes device files. Thus the first thing comes to my mind is that you're missing SAM patches... Anyway check that you have GR and HWE patches at least of Sep 2002 installed
