Reducing Carbon Footprints

Is there any software or other solutions to help us shutdown our computers at the weekend and have tham available online ready for use monday mornings?

I think there is a solution for Windoze, but know of no way for linux and hpux servers.

One option is a 'mamageable' ups but a bit heavy handed and not all the UX servers would boot back up on power restore

Kevin,

Obviously you could make a cron entry to shut the systems down, but I know of no way to get them to automatically come back up without human intervention.

Re: Reducing Carbon Footprints

Shalom,

These Unix/Linux systems are supposed to be run all the time. They do not do so well without their moving parts moving.

The solution is to reduce the server count.

Take very 16 HP-UX servers and make them vpar's on a much larger, more powerful system. vpar is HP-UX virtualization.

Same thing for Linux, just use their xen product or a commerical alternative like vmware.

You can realize a 75% power savings and still run the things all weekend like they were designed to be run.

Re: Reducing Carbon Footprints

Just like Windoze boxes, some but not all, can be shutdown completely including power off. Some, but not all, can wake up with LAN commands (oops, you'll have to leave all the network stuff turned on). So the answer is maybe. Older boxes do not have the electronics to be powered off so for Linux and Windoze, it's the hardware first, then software support for that box's power controls.

For HP-UX newer boxes with GSP/MP processor can be powered off but not within the OS...you'll need an external box to login to the GSP or MP, then tell the box to shutdown. And unless you have explicitly disabled the HP-UX servers from auto-booting, I don't know any of them would fail to bootup at power-on.

Re: Reducing Carbon Footprints

Laughable, and only applicable to little stuff being run on small circuits (not 220):

Years ago, I need to have an MSDOS PC shutdown, and then early monday morning wake up and look in a network mount point, find a file and transmit (EDI) the file.

Well, I had no problem with the shutdown (as it were, for MSDOS), but the startup was daunting.

The solution was to use one of those little electrical outlet timers (like for a coffee pot for example).

Worked good.
