Re: Regarding telnet and rlogin

1.) With rlogin, you can use /etc/hosts.equiv or $HOME/.rhosts file to allow logging in from a specified host without typing your password. Rlogin also has an option to use Kerberos authentication.

With telnet, you always have to type your username and password.

2.) Telnet uses TCP port 23; rlogin uses TCP port 513. They use different protocols, so a telnet client won't work with a rlogin server and vice versa.

Neither telnet nor rlogin is a secure protocol: both will transmit your entire session without encryption. If you want security, consider installing and using SSH instead.

Note that SSH comes pre-installed with HP-UX 11iv2 (11.23) and up, and HP-UX install-time security levels already work with it.

Re: Regarding telnet and rlogin

Shalom,

both are run by the internet services daemon inetd. They are configured in /etc/inetd.conf

rlogin stands for remote login, designed for remote access from one system to another. Its commonly used to provide password free access between systems for cron jobs and people that don't want to remember 100 passwords.

telnet is designed with no password free access possible.

Both protocols authenticate in clear text, which is not secure, anyone on the network can read the password with a simple sniffer.

That security concern is why you are better off with Secure Shell(ssh).

Re: Regarding telnet and rlogin

My answer: not much.
"The difference between me and you? I will read the man page." and "Respect the hat." and "You could just do a search on ITRC, you don't need to start a thread on a topic that's been answered 100 times already." Oh, and "What. no points???"
