Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Can someone explain/help me. I want to remove the tape drive and reinstall the tape drive because it is not working. I did rmsf -H for all the tape devices, removed the scsi from the tape drive and rebooted. When I do an ioscan I still see the hardware paths and there is nothing attached.
# ioscan -fnC tape

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

This looks to me like fibre channel attached - not scsi.

Hope this helps!

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Hi,

run insf -e or insf -v -Ctape to create device files.
Best wishes,

Ganesh.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Also the output of

# model

would be helpful.

What kind of tape device (library?) do you have?

Looks like you have 2 drives only, but more device files.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Yes, there is fiber to our SAN and Commvault backup. I am waiting for the ioscan -fn to run and will post it when completed.
I could not get this tape drive to work on the other Itanium system. The number on the tape drive set to 5 and all scsi's use direct connect.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

What I can see so far is this:

insf: Installing special files for stape instance 1 address 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.0.0.0.1
insf: Installing special files for stape instance 4 address 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.0.0.0.2

insf: Installing special files for stape instance 2 address 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.255.0.0.1
insf: Installing special files for stape instance 3 address 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.255.0.0.2

This is not locally connected!

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Yes it is. I attached the cable directly from the system to the tape drive. Is it possibly the tape drive itself?

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Let's see what you have:

fc 0 0/0/10/1/0 fcd CLAIMED INTERFACE HP AB378-60001 4Gb Single Port PCI/PCI-X Fibre Channel Adapter (FC Port 1)
/dev/fcd0
...
ctl 16 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.0.0.0.0 sctl CLAIMED DEVICE HP NS E2400FC-4G
/dev/rscsi/c19t0d0
tape 1 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.0.0.0.1 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP Ultrium 3-SCSI
/dev/rmt/1m /dev/rmt/c19t0d1BEST
/dev/rmt/1mb /dev/rmt/c19t0d1BESTb
/dev/rmt/1mn /dev/rmt/c19t0d1BESTn
/dev/rmt/1mnb /dev/rmt/c19t0d1BESTnb
tape 4 0/0/10/1/0.90.4.0.0.0.2 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP Ultrium 3-SCSI
/dev/rmt/4m /dev/rmt/c19t0d2BEST
/dev/rmt/4mb /dev/rmt/c19t0d2BESTb
/dev/rmt/4mn /dev/rmt/c19t0d2BESTn
/dev/rmt/4mnb /dev/rmt/c19t0d2BESTnb

I think these 2 drives are part of a library, because of the NSR.

Maybe you have only 2, but because of a wrong config you see them twice (as point-to-point and loop connected).

But there is no other (local) tape!

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Where did you connect the scsi drive?
The Ultra 160 scsi on the far right of the back of the box.

What I/O bay and slot? Bay 4.

There are 3 bays out of 4 being used. They are all direct connect and terminated.
Torsten.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Bay and slot are related to the server I/O.

The far right slot is bay 1 slot 8.

The h/w path is 1/0/1/1.

Let's have a look at your ioscan:

ba 12 1/0/1 lba CLAIMED BUS_NEXUS Local PCI-X Bus Adapter (122e)
ba 13 1/0/1/1/0 PCItoPCI CLAIMED BUS_NEXUS PCItoPCI Bridge
ext_bus 6 1/0/1/1/0/1/0 c8xx CLAIMED INTERFACE SCSI C1010 Ultra160 Wide LVD
target 19 1/0/1/1/0/1/0.7 tgt CLAIMED DEVICE
ctl 7 1/0/1/1/0/1/0.7.0 sctl CLAIMED DEVICE Initiator
/dev/rscsi/c6t7d0

There is NOTHING attached (visible).

Check cable and drive (bent pins)!

Hope this helps!

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Thank you. It is working I moved the cable to the only other scsi slot on the far left end and ran "insf -e" again.
It picked up and created a /dev/rmt/5mn. I ran the make_recovery_tape and it is working. I also see what you mean and looked at the descriptions of the Ultrium 3-SCSI not the tape drive.

Re: Reinstalling the Tape Drive

Thanks to the forum help, I moved the scsi cable to the another slot and it ran the insf -e command. It picked up the tape drive. The original location was to the slot on the far right and it was moved to the 16th slot on the left.
