Remote Administration

Team:

Please guide me to adminster some remote HP-UX systems. Any links/experiences regarding what tools are required, what may be the limitations etc. would help.

Thanks

Joe

Re: Remote Administration

Your options may be very different depending on the models you are working on. Servers without a networked solution would need extra external hardware for remote administration. What models are you going to be working on?

Re: Remote Administration

Shalom Joe,

It depends on the servers.

The rp34xx line has a NIC built in with a LAN console. All you need to do is connect and you have complete remote console administration and control of the GSP(or succesor technology) card.

This lets you boot the system, power it on and off, do anything your heart desires.

Other systems like the rp5450 series came with a GSP card that provides the same functionality.

You can hang a secure web console off almost any HP-UX server and get the same benefits.

Further, VNC has a client/server combination for HP-UX that can let you run gui tools in X windows from anywhere on the planet.

Re: Remote Administration

Hi Joe,
As SEP mention there is a built-in LAN-console (network port) on several machines.

You can telnet to this port and administer it.

If you have a machine which does not have a LAN-console port, only an ordinary RS232 serial console port, you could buy a WEB-console adapter.
You connect to the web-console via your browser (java), and https.

LAN-console security issue:
If you are using LAN-consoles, I recommend that you put these on a separate subnet and then control the access to these subnets to enhance security. (contact your network admin)

When you connect to the console you will get in contact with the GSP.
From the GSP you could either do a console login (command: CO) and get a login, or you could do other stuff, as check logs, boot, power control (turn machine off/on) etc.

Example: inetd have died...
In such situation you must have direct access to the console of the machine.

For doing remote administration a lan or web console is a must !!!
Alternative is a "skilled local runner" :-)

I only need local runner when there is cables/devices that physically need to be attached/removed.
