Remote backup

I have a sco unix system that I want to backup
to an HP-UX system tape drive. It does not have fbackup on the sco of course. Is there any way I can do this? I want to backup sco accross the network to an hpux tape drive.

Re: Remote backup

Robert,

Perhaps some sort of comglomerations of remsh and dd across the network?

Backup products like Maestro and Omniback do this sort of thing as a matter of course, but standard utilities are going to require a bit of effort.

Re: Remote backup

Sure Robert.

You can't do an Ignite backup, but there are serveral methods.

You can Open the sco system up to nfs with the directories you wish to back up in the /etc/exports file

Run whatever process on sco actually exports the filesystems.

Then you mount them from the HP-UX side, fbackup them and then umount them.

You can also use Samba to open up the SCO sysetm and CIFS/9000 client(samba) on the HP-UX side.

What you can not do is share a tape drive on an HP-9000 server for use by the SCO server or even other HP-9000 servers.

The only exception I've seen to this rule is Veritas Netbackup media server.

Re: Remote backup

1) If affordable, Backup solutions like Legato Networker can do the trick. Perhaps you can do this with OB and Veritas too, but I am not sure about that. This backup software will support remote backup of SCO-UX systems.

2) If you are not looking for another software purchase, try NFS (performance and reliability will be poor) and backup. Try mounting SCO-UX file systems through NFS and then try backing it up.

3) Another option would be to use remsh to run a remote command to use the tape drive.

I have not tried options 2 and 3 by myself!

Re: Remote backup

I am trying to nfs out the file from sco. I updated /etc/exports on sco and ran exportfs -av on sco. I put on entry in the fstab on HP-UX, when I run mount -a I get

nfs mount: get_fh: pluto:: RPC: Program not registered
nfs mount: get_fh: pluto:: RPC: Program not registered
nfs mount: retry: retrying(1) for: /pluto_data after 5 seconds
nfs mount: retry: giving up on: /pluto_data

Re: Remote backup

Make sure that your rpc processes are running:

# rpcinfo -p
# rpcinfo

Also, check rpc.mountd is running:
# ps -aef | grep rpc

restart nfs services if possible and try again. Make sure that the client and server processes are running, NFS version, patches etc.

Re: Remote backup

In /etc/fstab you need the nfs parameter on the line.

You don't need it for a mount command from the commmand line.

mount sco://mount_point /sco

Strange, but thats my experience.

Re: Remote backup

You should have lots of choices to make use of the local HP's tape drive:

You can use SCO's backup utility and pipe it over to the local HP's tape drive, Of course youmust set up your rhosts or SSH keys if using Secure Shell:

dump 0f - /filesystem|ssh hpuxserver "dd of=/dev/rmt0mbn"

You can use cpio or tar accross the network thhrough pipes ending on your HP's local tape device (see man pages for tar and cpio)

Re: Remote backup

SCO NFS may not be running.
In sco you can
nfs stop
nfs start

to get them running.

I'd also try to mount manually before releying on /etc/fstab

mount scobox:/dir /mnt
