remote bootable backup

hi,

i have 2 hp machines (A and B). A has a tape drive and also has the ignite software installed on it (i just ran the swinstall command, no configuration what so ever has been done). I have 2 tasks that i want to do.

1) i want to take a bootable backup of B on A's tape drive. I tried make_net_recovery -i -s A
this gives me the first screen where i have to press enter, then after pressing enter i get the screen Recovery: Archive Defaults (B)
which shows the destination host and directory etc. but this will wite to /var/opt/ignite/recovery/archives/B (on machine A) and i want it to write to the tape drive of machine A. If i specify the desitnation directory as /dev/rmt/0m it tried to mount it and gives an error.
Any suggestions on how i can get a bootable backup of B on A's tape drive?

2)I did a make_tape_recovery on B and did a full system backup. I want to now restore the data from the tape onto machine B (B has no tape drive) such that B is almost a clone of A. But this has to be done with the Tape in A's tape drive it self..
Please advise...

Re: remote bootable backup

Ignite has no facility to use remote tape drives. There is a section in the Ignite documentation about how to do a make_net_recovery and dump the resulting image to tape. That may be of some help.

Re: remote bootable backup

First you have to prepare the network recovery and then transfer that onto tape drive. The detailed procedure is in Ignite documents.

Re: remote bootable backup

I'm not sure I followed your second question - you say you did a make_tape_recovery on a machine (B) that has no tape drive. I can't imagine how you did that. Then you ask how to restore the data, once again on a machine with no tape drive. This is also impossible as far as I know.

Re: remote bootable backup

Item 1 has been coverd. A good file to look at regarding that is /opt/ignite/share/doc/makenetrec.txt

Item 2 - Again, no real easy way to do it. If the tape drive is an external drive, unplug it from sysa and plug it into sysb.

Re: remote bootable backup

Hi,

to make a ignite recovery archive or to use a ignite recovery archive to install the OS on a system, you need a local tape drive.

If you don't have a tape drive, you have to choice of setting up a ignite server and then use that as a ignite installation depot. You can also use ignite server to store your system OS archive using make_net_recovery.

Here is a link to the ignite site.

Check out the FAQ & the documentation.

Hope this helps.

Re: remote bootable backup

Hi
My mistake, the second situation is as follows:

I did a make_tape_recovery on A. I want to now restore the data from the tape onto machine B (B has no tape drive) such that B is almost a clone of A. But this has to be done with the Tape in A's tape drive it self..

The Tape drive is on A and not on B.

Re: remote bootable backup

Nick,

Sanjay has given you an excellent answer - the Ignite Server is built especially for what you want. All you need is some docs and a bit of test time. We had it put in and running from scratch in about 3 days. Perfect solution for what you you are asking.
