remote fbackup

I have a new hp rx-2660 itanium with hp-ux 10 but without any tape unit, but i have also the old rp 5405 also with hp-ux, and a dlt unit. ¿How can i (if possible) make a fbackup from the rx2660 to the dlt /dev/rmt0 (dlt tape) in the rp 5405

Re: remote fbackup

You must set up 'remsh' so that root on the rx2660 can remsh to the rp5405.

See the man page for 'hosts.equiv' and/or 'rhosts' for information on how to do this.

The configuration of /etc/hosts.equiv or .rhosts (in root's home directory) MUST be done on the rp5405.

Once you can remsh as root from the rx2660 to the rp5405, then you can run fbackup and specify a remote tape device.

Have a look at the 'fbackup' man page for information on how to specify the remote tape device.

Re: remote fbackup

In the rp5405 i permit telnet (without ssh) not in the rx2660, also i would made the copy with the same user and password. Would this simplified the process (sorry for my english, i hope you understand what i want to explain)

Re: remote fbackup

No. Telnet is irrelevant.

If you want to do fbackup to a remote tape device, you MUST have remsh set up between the 2 servers.

Re: remote fbackup

I,ve tried remsh from rx to rp, it ask me for the password and once i write it, i log on the rp, so i supose remsh is permited. The question is, if i try to make a fbackup from rx to rp, would i need to put the password in any place?, and if so where?.
for example, if i wanto to backup /u01/oracle from rx to /dev/rmt/0m on rp, is it enaugth to put:
fbackup -f rp5405/dev/rmt/0m -c /var/adm/fbackupfiles/config -i /u03/oracle -v > /var/adm/fbacku
pfiles/fbackup.log 2>&1

where rp5405 would be the rp ip

As Patrick said, look at hosts.equiv(4) or .rhosts, then you don't need a password.

If you have .rhosts, you don't need a password. (But it isn't secure as ssh.)

Re: remote fbackup

Hello Ignacio,
It looks like you are not very familiar with the rlogin, remsh, rexec, rcp services.
First to be able to do a remote fbackup you HAVE to enable these services. These services allow you to login, execute and copy files remotely without authentications, as you don't have to type in a username and password.
What the fbackup utility does is that it does an rexec to the remote service manipulating the rmt utility which enables it to send commands to the tape.

so what we need to do now is enable those services for the root user. This is done by either creating a /etc/hosts.equiv or $HOME/.rhosts and you type in it "root remote_hostname" where remote_hostname is the name of the remote host that wants to be permitted to the server. So you'll go to the rp5405 server create either one of those files and type in it, root rx2660-hostname

try out the rlogin service for example make sure it logs in without a password
then issue the fbackup command in the following manner:
fbackup -f rx2660_hostname:/dev/rmt/0m ....

hope this helps
