Remote mount of DDS drive?

Hi.

Is it possible to remote write to a DDS drive? E.g Local SCSI attached DDS4 on ServerA can be written to remotley by Server B which has no drive of its own?

I need to make a tape ignite image of a server at a remote site which has no drive of its own.

Thanks

Re: Remote mount of DDS drive?

Shalom,

No, the OS will not permit a remote mount of a DDS4 drive. Simply can't be done.

HP Serviceguard seems to have some tape sharing capabilities but I don't think it will help you.

What we do is have a movable, SCSI DDS4 drive.

Re: Remote mount of DDS drive?

Hi Paul,

You can use fbackup/frecover for backup/retore remote DDS tape drive. Please use SAM, which is easy :-)

Ignite image cannot remote boot.

Re: Remote mount of DDS drive?

Paul,

Provided you have sufficient disc space on ServerA, you can do a network ignite backup to hard disc. You can then make a bootable tape from the network backup.

Re: Remote mount of DDS drive?

Excuse me,
I am a bit lost.
I always thought one can only mount block devices which offer random access?

But, yes one can send a stream over the net to a remote box that is supplied with a tape drive.
This is common practice for ufsdumps of / with Solaris boxes.
You can even read from a remote tape once you booted from cdrom into a mini root environment (how else should a bare metal recovery be executed without a Jumpstart server?)
So I can't see why this shouldn't work with HP-UX as well?
Of course Solaris does lack the comfort of Ignite one must admid, and Jumpstart yet isn't at pars with Ignite (I hope zfs for / will make an end to this Solaris misery).

Re: Remote mount of DDS drive?

This is something that I got from here (ITRC)
the original post is own by Sundar, however I dunno find the link but I have the steps that will help you to do what you need.

-------------------------------------------
I had the same requirement sometime back. But then I learned remote tape drives cannot be used with make_recovery.

You have to use make_net_recovery and create the bootable lif image which should be copied to the tape using dd. I dont think fbackup can be used. fbackup creates its own headers and footers and canot make the tape bootable.

# make_net_recovery -s iux_servr -x inc_entire=vg00

in iux_server

# cd /var/opt/ignite/clients//recovery/latest

# make_medialif -f system_cfg -f archive_cfg -f control_cfg -l /var/tmp/lif1

# instl_adm -d -F /var/tmp/lif1 > /var/tmp/c

# vi /var/tmp/c
....
...
control_from_server=FALSE
run_ui=TRUE
#

# instl_adm -F /var/tmp/lif1 -f /var/tmp/c

# dd if=/var/tmp/lif1 of=/dev/rmt/0mn obs=2k

# cd /var/opt/ignite/recovery/archives//

# dd if=$PWD/ of=/dev/rmt/0mn obs=10k

Re: Remote mount of DDS drive?

Its not available....though i always it should be. It would have saved my many visits to distant network linked sites.
Method given above to take ignite on disk and then make the tape is for you......
