remote server connection...
Hi
We're attempting to use a new linux server running red-hat7.3 to connect to remote Unix hosts (9000 servers). The two modems use serial ports and are standard multitech modems. Initial problems with character sets has been sorted. The problem regards process and modem resetting. If the connection is terminated via exit/logout then the connection resets itself. If however the line drops or is terminated other ways then the modem remails 'busy' or dialling over may show the login prompt but no shell is produced. The getty processes may or may not reset themselves. init q or killing the process associated to the terminal respawns the getty process but often doesn't help. To top it off uugetty will work on some sites but not others. This relates to 6 hp servers running hp-ux10.20 and 11.
The gettydef I'm using is:
Ndef # B9600 HUPCL SANE CS8 ISTRIP IXANY TAB3
# B9600 HUPCL SANE CS8 ISTRIP IXANY TAB3
#login: #Ndef
the inittab is set to runmode 3 & respawn and either using getty or uugetty -r -t 60 -h
Getting very frustrated at constntly having to ask to have modems reset.
Is the problem Unix end Linux end or modem configurations?? Connection via hyperterminal doesnt seem to cause a problem.

Re: remote server connection...
Since your gettydefs looks pretty standard, I would look at the modems. Are they set for the factory defaults? You should pay particular attention to the DCD parameters and make sure that it is not forced high. Also you might try RTS follows DCD as this should signal the server that the carrier has dropped for what ever reason. Are you using a cable that supports all 25 pins, or 9 pins in the case of a 9 pin dsub, and none of them are hardwired to defeat signaling. Like tying RTS and CTS pairs or DTR DSR.
Good luck.
Good luck.
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.
