remsh & rlogin hang
From time to time I have experienced a problem with remsh & rlogin hanging, but not for all users. I have checked that there are the correct entries in .rhosts and hosts.equiv, but it still does not work.
There are no errors in the syslog and the only way to cure it is to reboot the server, which is not acceptable in a live environmant.
Any help appreciated.
Regards
Tim

Re: remsh & rlogin hang
If it is really a hang (i.e. no response, not some kind of error message), then you might try to use the IP address instead of the hostname. If that works, you probably you have some kind of name <--> address lookup problem, i.e. DNS etc.. It would also be interesting to know if telnet works when remsh/rlogin hang.

Re: remsh & rlogin hang
You can also check the arp table, sometimes it gets messed up and entries need to be deleted.
do a man arp
if the table gets messed up, the response sometimes gets lost and routed somewhere else.

Re: remsh & rlogin hang
I agree with the two first posts, it's either DNS or bad arp table entries. THe bad arp table entries could also be on your router - but that typically affects everyone. Like it was said, try using the IP when the name fails.
