remsh login incorrect

remsh login incorrect

Hi All,

I am trying to remote login from one HPUX machine to another one. The remsh login had been working fine for long time. Now, it is not working and it gives the remshd: login incorrect error message. Could you let me know the possible causes of this problem. I check the inet.d daemon and it is runing too. All the .rhosts entries in the target machine also correct.

Re: remsh login incorrect

Hi,

This could most probably an nslookup issue. To find it out, enable inetd logging on the box you are trying to rlogin to and observe syslog.log

On the target system
#inetd -l
#tail -f /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

Now try to rlogin from the other box. And observe what you get in syslog.log. The hostname it gets should match the hostname you put in .rhosts.

Re: remsh login incorrect

Did anyone change the "remshd" line in /etc/inetd.conf ? It should look like this ..
shell stream tcp nowait root /usr/lbin/remshd remshd
If it's not, change it and reread inetd.conf file by running ..
# inetd -c

Re: remsh login incorrect

check that nothing w/ the hostname resolution has changed...

telnet to the target box and login, run "who -muR" and the hostname returned here be resolved to what you have in the .rhosts... to test you could put just the ip in the .rhosts to see if name resolution is a prob.

Hope this helps,

Re: remsh login incorrect

Also look for the account on the remote server if it is disabled.

try enabling account by /usr/lbin/modprpw -k username and then try remsh

Good Luck..

Re: remsh login incorrect

Hi Sri,

After enabling the login name by inetd -l, I can see the following error message from /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file.

connection from unknown (xx.xx.xx.xx) ip Address.

Re: remsh login incorrect

login to another machine with telnet.

do who -u, now the name it shows in the last column-ip address or hhostname should be present in .rhosts file.

Also check in reverse direction this should solve your problem.

The itrc forums Jewish Grandmother speaks again.

remote logins with the Berkeley protocols is insecure. I recommend migrating away from it.

Here is a link to the free software.

Attached is a link to a cookbook to help you get to the same level of functionality that you currently get from rlogin et al.

If you're tired of hearing this from me, I apologize, just zero point the post and move on.
