You may want to review the following url:

Re: Render or Animation programs?
If you want to view and manipulate models from DXF format files, you could use VisView or VisMockup-
http://www.eai.com/products/visview/
http://www.eai.com/products/vismockup/
They both read DXF format. I have not used them to read DXF myself.
There are also some free DXF to VRML and DXF to Java3D convertors, but I have yet to see a good free one.

Re: Render or Animation programs?
you could use POVRay as a raytracer. Download it from the software porting archive for example here: http://hpux.asknet.de/hppd/hpux/X11/Viewers/povray-3.1
More Information at www.povray.org. Do a search on DXF and import and you will find some information about importing DXF Files (2D and 3D) in POVRay.
Hope this helps.
Regards Stefan
