replace L3000 6x with L3000 - 5x

I need to replace an existing L-class server (model 9000/800/L3000-6x) with an L-class server (9000/800/L3000-5x)
The main application is Oracle. Will I have to relink Oracle or any other products since the replacement server has different CPU's?
I am planning on just swapping the disks or using an ignite tape .. Thanks in advance for your input.

I can't think of a single reason that this would require you to re-link oracle. I would use an ignite tape to re-establish your root VG on the new server then vgimport all your other VGs. That should be all that's required.

No, no relinking should be required if you are staying on the same HP-UX version.

Although I am somewhat confused as to why you'd downgrade from 650MHz to 550MHz cpus.

Hi Roger,

No, I don't believe you'll have to relink the binaries, but if you wish to just move the disks over you need to insure you have the same cards in the same slots in the newer system so that the devices will not "change".

If I were you I'd use an Ignite tape to recreate the root/boot disks & then just import the Oracle binary & data drives after the new OS is loaded.

Re: replace L3000 6x with L3000 - 5x

Roger,
As long as the Oracle Home lands in the same spot (directory path) on the new server - you won't need to relink the Oracle Home. If the path changes, you should relink the binaries in the Oracle Home, and possibly the binaries for the application(s) that you are running against that Oracle Home - depending on whether or not your applications use the same ORACLE_HOME as the database server or not. This is because *some* items will be using shared libraries and the code to find them may be/can be built into the relinked executable. You could just wait and see if anything gives you trouble, but when moving to different file/path locations - I find it always less trouble in the long run just to relink at the start.

Roger,

You don't need to relink, this might be the case when you install a new version of libc(patch).

Re: replace L3000 6x with L3000 - 5x

Hi Roger,

As allready clarified no relinking of oracle is required but it is always better to restore OS using ignite rather then putting these OS disks directly to other system.
For non OS disks you can simply do a vgimport.

Re: replace L3000 6x with L3000 - 5x

The CPUs are quite the same architecture, so You shouldn't have to relink Oracle.
Swapping the disks should work in general, but You might experience trouble with changes to the existing /stand/ioconfig - fixing them is no problem, but an Ignite restore will be faster in the end.
